This is my first scene rendered in Blender (Eevee) I know there are issues with it, some things I would do differently if I would do it all over, just unfortunately with my current hardware the scene was so heavy in Blender that even adjusting materials and setting up lighting was so slow that it took a week to get to the point of rendering out the final shots, even though the scene itself was done in a day or two in iClone. Anyway, if anyone watches it, I'm interested in your take, and your advices regarding where and how could I improve. Thank you

A little more subtle head movement may be needed but I really like the narrative so far, hope to see more of this story.

AutoDidact (1/23/2024) A little more subtle head movement may be needed but I really like the narrative so far, hope to see more of this story.Thank you. You're right, I need to improve in this area, I find especially hard these type of more natural and subtle movements like how people move their heads during talking. Just to clarify, you meant that it needs to be more subtle or that the quantity of it is lacking?

Yo, interesting story, makes curious... Not sure though why you made the effort to render in Blender a similar result definitely could be accomplished within iClone...

toystorylab (1/25/2024) Yo, interesting story, makes curious... Not sure though why you made the effort to render in Blender a similar result definitely could be accomplished within iClone...Thank you. I made it in Blender because I've recently started to learn it and I wanted to try out rendering a scene there. It could be probably done much better in Blender too but I'm still just learning how it works. I'm also working on improving my iClone renders, since I've started learning Blender and rendering out stills with Cycles, I also started trying to recreate more realistic (or at least better looking) renders with iClone, in a sort of "reverse engineering" way. I made a post about it but I edited it and since then it vanished. I might post it again because it doesn't look like it will come back.

that was really good, and i feel inclined to critique because i thought it was good and I watch way too much tv. :w00t:your editing had me dizzy, you needed more L and J cuts to tell the story, the way you kept going back and forth to show everyone speaking became redundant and distracting, some of those edits should have been showing how the listener was reacting to break up the repetition, and maybe some over the shoulder cinematography where the person talking is blurred with depth of field and facing the person listening with their reaction to what they are being told or even b roll where you do a quick scan of the location or someone else in the area. I don't give a rats kitten about the visuals themselves, because if your story is good, i'd enjoy it being told with stick figure drawings in the sand lol. Hope this helps, again, great work, the story was well told, my comment is on the presentation in the editing and how it got in the way of your story.

Thank you, and thank you very much for your detailed critique. Yes, I guess I got used to this style of editing becuase in my first videos the characters' mouth didn't move so I wanted to make sure it's obvious who is speaking, and it makes no sense that I'm still making my dialouge scenes in this style till this day. So it's a really valid perception, it's good that you pointed this out, I will try to learn more creative ways to use my cameras during dialouges. Like you hinted in your description, the editing and the camera angles themselves are telling a story (doesn't matter if the audience consciously realizes it or not).

A few blinks, and maybe having the woman character look aside or down when she is feeling uncomfortable.

Auroratrek (1/28/2024) A few blinks, and maybe having the woman character look aside or down when she is feeling uncomfortable. Good suggestions, thank you. You have really good blink timing in your video btw. Also really expressive movements, great lighting etc. I'm looking forward for your upcoming works (this goes for all the creators here). I saw you render your scenes in C4D. Is it difficult to make all the materials work in C4D? I've only tried it a few times so far but I couldn't figure out how to make things like hair materials work. I think I tried adjusting alpha/opacity maps but it didn't turn out the way it was originally.

Thanks! It's a little work to fix the textures in C4D, but just part of the long process of animation--LOL. The upside for characters that repeat from scene to scene is that you can copy and paste the textures from a previous scene, so that saves some work. Most of the hair I've used is adapted polygon hair from Daz, exported in an FBX. Reallusion strand hair seems to only work exported as Alembic, and that has its own workflow, and of course can take longer to render. I'm experimenting with C4D native hair, but the hard part is making it consistent for repeating characters.
