Hey guys.

I'm trying to snap something to the grid so that it moves only on the squares. The only problem is that it's not aligning with the squares. It's moving in the right increments like it's suppose to, but it's not lined up on the squares. How do I get it to line up? thanks.

I never use snap to grid, but if the increments are correct, couldn't you set the initial position of whatever you want to move with switched to grid switched off and then switch it on and do your movements?

Hi cube,
Can you be more specific on what is it that you want to line up to the grid? From what you are saying it sounds like you might need to reposition the pivot point on the object. But like I said your statement is little unclear. Can you show am image of the object you want to align to grid and where you want it to align to. That way i can help you for sure. ;)

Cheers,

Thanks for replying. Sure.

Alright I'm trying to make a layout of a small city. before I put any buildings or anything on it, I wanna layout the street platforms first... those are pretty much Floor props. Now, the corner of the floor should be on the corner of one of the grid squares... but it's not. It's in the middle of a square.

EDIT: Alright I think I got it... hmmm it would be nice if things had actual meassurements and if we could set the exact size for something... I say this because then building scenes would be a little easier. When making things like cities from multiple buildings and things, it is sometimes hard to alignand match up things. The exact meassurements would help... and some more improved grid spacing too I guess. Where things auto-align to the grid itself.... Oh and a grid on the virtical plane of space as well.

Thanks guys.

Yeah its what i thought, you need to reposition the pivot point to a corner to have better control of the building placement when using snap to grid, ill post a quick video tonight if the boss of me(baby) lets me. :D

Hi, while we're on the subject...I thought I'd try my hand at creating a city again, but this time using snap to grid and snap to angle.  But, I'm finding the street props--from Reallusion's City Elements--are not behaving as I thought they would.  That is, my thought was to set a grid spacing of 2000 [if I'm not mistaken, the street sections are 2000x2000] and then they would super easily move around.  Such does not seem the case.  What is my grave misunderstanding????

And, you mention resetting the pivot for the buildings.  I don't believe I can do that in iClone 3???

Thanx for any help.

Dave

Hi Dave,
I think you are little confused on how to use the snap to grid system. :P Have you taken a look at my introduction to iclone4 tutorial (just click on my signature below to take you there)? A lot of it still applies to Iclone 3 as well. It explains how to use the grid system and how to offset the pivot point as well. I can't remember if that was in iclone 3 or not, but it should be in the modify panel under pivot menu and it is called "scene root" not "reset pivot". Sorry I should have mentioned that in my previous post. :P

Cheers,
