Is it right that the new 3Dexchange in going to allow the export of Iclone content. If so does this include character export? If so this is fantastic news but does raise a issue (for me at least)I would really like to see the character creation tools within Iclone to continue developing ,but I am worried that this area may be neglected in favour of allowing people to modify their characters in a external program. Just a thought:)

I REALLY REALLY hope not because I'm not very good at character design or modeling and if they drop this, I'm pretty much done for.

As for character export, they may or may not do this because of thigns like people putting them in game engines and things like that.

That may not be a bad thing .. look at quidam3 that is a character development tool that allows for the use in games under licence. If Iclone allowed this then Iclone could become a cool game development tool without becoming a game engine ....

Personally I think that's a GREAT idea... but then... look at the price of Quidam... now look at the price of quidam for indie devs to use their characters in games... over 1,200 dollars... Yeah... no thanks.

If RL does this and decideds to sell a liscence for games, I hope they look towards small companies and indipendant developers (inshort... the little guys), because a lot of chompanies who make character creation stuff tend not to. (Daz is having a hard time figuring out if they wanna go market more for the Pro companies or not)

Reallusion, if this is being thought about, please consider us tiny game developers using things like Lite C and Unity 3D (NOT the pro version) who are just getting started or don't have the budget to fork out 1,200 dollars right up front.

Tha's all I ask if they do that. But so far, they only mention obj expot which means you'd have to rerig everything.

Okay if 3Dxchange does allow 3d models to be exported as obj to be used as ya want .. why are character models so much more expensive.. If I can use a building, car and what not, in games why not characters....just a thought:)

Plus yeah quidam 3 is very expensive for game licence..................

But Iclone if it worked on the charater development side could easily compete with quidam , also if Iclone had a walk designer it give poser a run for its money.....
Plus Quidam only offers charater developmeny, Iclone could offer character development and movie creation for games ..... Im not a game developer but if I were I think that would be very interesting... :)

There are allways two sides on this. When light comes and show what there is to see, the darknes takes away the things we like the most. But some people like the dark more because the imagination stays alive and is often more beautifull then what is really there.

The transport files will be objectfiles. But that is light enough for those who wants to see what there is to see.

Where is that post at?

Hmmm...

That's a good piont, I don't see why characters are so much more... but this may be because with other objects, it's just that... an object. It just sits there, where characters have to be rigged and morph targes are there as well, so you're not just buying the shape.

Also, there is a company that's making something that is similar to iClone but with a full working dynamic physics engine (kind of like the Euphoria engine in Grand Theft Auto 4) but it is open for anyone to use and cheap enough for anyone to use as well. This I think can be used to make movies and games... and can be integrated directly with the Torque engine.

This is giving iClone a run I think or it will... only draw back to their thing is... NO CHARACTERS, you have to find them from somewhere else... as is with EVERY OTHER easy to use game and movie thing aside from Moviestorm and The Movies, and iClone.

I don't see why a company can't make a game engine with a character creator right in it... they have a plant creator, terrain creator, level ulder, but NO character creation at all.

This is why I previously suggested that iClone turn itself into a game engine but NOOO, no one liked the idea.

Machinima and games aren't even that far apart, but apparanlty, there are those who like to keep the two separate.

I understand about liscences and copyright about distributing characters, but surely that can be worked out without having to sell your car in able to do it.

As for characters being exportable from 3DX as .obj files... I'm not very good at rigging, so fas for game developing, it looks like I'm still going to be at a loss for characers... oh well.

Blue, that site you showed in my other thread dwith those anime-ish characters seems really nice, a good number of characters in a wide set of formats for only about 140 dollars doesn't seem like a bad deal at all.

I wonder if there are more sets like that.

Hi
Veeke I do not know what you said, but you said it very nicely.

Dream I agree that the difference between a Game and a Movie is very slight; both are means of telling a story. I think your Idea of Iclone becoming a games engine may have turned the Film makers off the idea because of the term ‘Game Engine’ maybe if you used the term ‘Interactive’ it may have been more appealing.

I think the thing with Iclone is what it ‘COULD’ be used for:

Storytelling,
3D modelling,
Character Creation.
Games Design,
Film Composition,

Well you get the idea. I think with the new 3Dexchange that Iclone will become my main 3D modelling package, It has already replaced After Effects in some areas, I hope it continues to replace programs as it develops.

Dreamcube, as "filmmaker" I have to speak up... It's not that I don't like the idea of iClone being useful as game development tool... It's just that personally I don't see a use for it for myself at this point in time.

The only thing I wouldn't want to happen is for iClone to stray away from its current design philosophy.  But a Game mode besides the Editor mode (which is what I normally use) and the Director mode is no problem. Most likely, I would even play with it! :w00t:

Well Blue, I meant aside from games andf movies in general, I meant the softwaer itself... also... you make a great point about the term "game". There is a company called Tale of Tales which makes "interactive media" It's pretty much a place you can walk around in, observe the environments, enjoy yourself, relax, think about the story behind it, and that's about it... if you look at it as a game, it will be a very BAD game, but if you look at it as an interactive environment, it's a great and new idea and conept for telling stories and poems.

http://tale-of-tales.com/

Check out some of their work. I think you'll find it very unique.\\Now onto the other subject ... I thought part of RL's concept was Create PLAY and... uh... something else... but the idea here is that iClone could become a software for interactive media as well as just movies. RL's KINDA did that with the widgets, but that's not really where I'm going with this. It'd be kind of like a director mode that anyone can play around in. So they could walk around, get in vehicles, jump fly... whatever is scripted to be done in director mode, anyone could do.

So it's not like the tech's not already there. Just make it so that that mode can be exported as like... an exe or something.
