@Sonic7 - Sorry to respond to slowly. I was "vacationing" (sort of) and was 99% offline for the past several days. Here is the article and item I was thinking of: https://www.anandtech.com/show/12543/the-western-digital-wd-black-3d-nand-ssd-review

On my phone... expect more typos than usual.
I am an SSD fan. Not first upgrade though, but if CPU and GPU are adequate, you will apprecite fast application launch times, and level load times if you game. I install OS and all apps onto SSD, multi-terabyte drive(s) for atorage. Able to survive well with 240GB, but would buy 500GB if shopping today.
Samsung is king, but someone just came out with very strong competitor . Look at "storage" area of Anandtech.com maybe 5 days ago.
SATA max of 6Gb/s which is great (and very low latency) but PCIe interface even much faster.

Hi Mike .... So - another 'vote' for Samsung .... nice ... - sorry to hear you had issues with the first two you bought. I suppose even 'solid state' isn't without it's problems, and no doubt they're only good for 'x' number of 'flips' or 'flops'.... hopefully many though. It staggers me to contemplate the way this stuff is made. I was looking at the specs on my 'graphics card' the other day and the specs quoted something like '1.2 billion transistors'. Back in the '60s, (when I was at primary school), 'transistor radios' (then Japanese built), would 'boast' of containing 6 or 7 (discrete) 'transistors' aka the little metal barrels with 3 protruding legs. Now 'billions' of equivalent junctions occupy a space 'a whole lot smaller' than those 'radios' did ... incredible really :)

Right now (and things do change all the time) Samsung is pretty well the accepted king of SSD. Toshiba, Crucial, Sandisk and WD all make very good drives that compete favorably in all areas, but Samsung (again, this is at this specific moment in time) seems to have the best price/performance ratio as well as a very good track record. (Yes, my 2TB drive is Samsung, but I looked at all of them very carefully and even sent back two drives before I ended up with it). But these are all great hardware and the price really is amazing compared to even just a couple of years ago.

Thanks for that animagic - yes I was starting to think along similar lines to you - (to s-t-r-e-t-c-h to a 500 GB). But 500 would have to be 'tops' for me atm. It's funny that 'Jfrog' happened to mention Samsung SSDs, because I was only talking to an IT friend yesterday, and he said his 'go to' choice for SSDs was 'Samsung'.... so I guess they must be OK ... :)

Sonic: if your laptop can only handle one drive then you should at least get 500 GB or preferably 1 TB. Reason being that your drive will have all of your system files as as well as your content files plus anything that you will render, which can add up easily.

SSD is faster at loading and booting Windows, the same for applications. Also, if you copy files from one SSD to another, the speed is WAY faster than between 2 HDD. The one area I have really noticed a drastic improvement is on the sound end, when using NI Kontakt sample player and loading a library that is large with lots of samples, SSDs fly. They load up GB sound libraries like in 10 seconds, whereas a HDD takes like 2 minutes. SSD is much better all over the place. You will not be disappointed. Agree with KT - As far as a direct iClone advantage, not so much...But it makes all of the surrounding experiences much faster.
