My interests in ICG and CC extend beyond real time animation as I looked for a system that would allow me to generate content for comic and graphic novel material. I'm a Daz/Poser user who has used both in support of my art - but now with CC in place, I eagerly embraced the idea of working with this new toolset for illustration purposes. Using IC6, I generated a basic set and two characters in CC and set about adapting a short script I had, "That Pale Light In The West" with the idea of enhancing the basic treatment I had already done as a straight pass render. How could I add a better pen-styled look to my work? Using Photoshop and the Akvis Sketch plug in, I was able to duplicate, layer the 2nd art piece as a Soft Light overlay after applying a custom pencil adjustment. For me, this became a much stronger comic-inspired illustration and I imported into Manga Studio 5 for text and bubble additions plus layout. By working with IC6, I was able to generate imagery that I found very suitable for a conversion using Akvis as a standalone B/W illustration. I composited a simple NYC street for the background here and adjusted levels and look accordingly. Below, I used the same approach extending the size of the frame using the same approach illustrated above combining a pencil sketch layer with the native IC6 render plus a BG composite in Photoshop. I'm looking forward to continuing my exploration of IC6 and CC as I generate new work this Fall in support of y creative endeavors. Hopefully, for other visual artists here looking to explore comic-styled illustration, this post will be of help. You can follow my continued developments, tests and discoveries on my Wordpress blog here.

Always nice to see in how many different ways the RL tools and all kind of companion apps are used. Thanks for sharing your interesting workflow and inspiring illustrations.

I experimented with using iClone (ver 5) for doing a graphic novel/comic book, and it was a fun experiment but alas I really didn't have a very good story in mind, was just messing around, but it was enjoyable still. I've been considering doing it again, especially since there's a recent thread here somewhere from vidi suggesting a great drawing app, that is very useful for graphic novel comic book work. And it'll allow for FBX import, so you could just come up with one character, import into the software (Clip Paint Studio (aka Manga Studio)) and pose as necessary in the different panels. Anywhere, here is my experiment from about a year and a half ago... https://www.dropbox.com/sh/paxh4zyn6vtbor1/AADFB2bIXAyJBC_nw2iohE-ua?dl=0

Thanks for posting your work, Wizaerd and sharing your digital comic. I think you are right when you say that story is truly everything. I look forward to seeing your next work.

Apologies for the nechro post, but thinking of getting into, again, graphic novel creation and wanted to know if iClone was up for this, or if I would be better off with daz3d.
thoughts?

I'm biased, obviously, but I think iClone is quite suitable. There are several members who have done graphic novels, jgrant comes to mind, and Shaky. There have been others with interesting projects but I can't think of their names right now. I did one of my own as a slide show (with sound):
To put things in comic form I used Comic Life.

that's an interesting mixof animation and video, plus sound effects. in your original post, Yu gave a fairly detailed description of your workflow, has this changed at all?

Animagic and I both participate in Pinhead projects.
The last project was called the "Comic Relief" project. In this case, "comic" mean relates to comic books, a.k.a. "graphic novels." The basic requirements were "Pinhead" and "graphic novel" style, and no animation (other than modest effects like a flickering candle).
It was a lot of fun. That's one of many great things about the Pinhead projects - they encourage you to try new techniques and styles.
