Why does my light go through the wall?

I need help from one of you brilliant people.  (Maybe from more than one.)  I ran into this once before and sort of ignored it, but I'd like to fix it today.

When I add a light, it shines THROUGH the wall and illuminates surfaces on the other side too.

You can see the light shines on the floor and on the wall.  Great.

But it shines on the floor on the OTHER side of the wall too.  Bad.

It looks like my wall is translucent.  The light is diminished, but not by much (and it should be 100% diminished by the wall).

Some notes:

  • Light is a spotlight
  • Shadow = Self-Cast Shadow
  • Wall = Cast Shadow
  • Wall = Receive Shadow

I've played with various settings, but to no avail.

What obvious thing am I overlooking?

Solved.

There is an "Opacity" setting on the light.

It was set at 50%.

Great find!:D

I have always hated it when my light shines from one cave tunnel, through the wall, to another tunnel.

To take care of the shadows getting to dark, I believe you can just bring the ambient light up a bit.

And.... It works with directional light as well. Not "points" though, as they cast no shadow.

Something new to add to my "default" scene.

The problem with this behavior (which I've noticed as well) is that it forces you to use very "harsh" shadows, which isn't always what you want. I would have expected lower Opacity to make dark less dark, not shine through a wall.

It seems counterintuitive that an "opacity" setting on a LIGHT would override the opacity setting on a solid object.

Really now, what's the point of that?  What's it doing?  Turning my light into an X-ray machine???

I agree, I would expect it to affect the opacity of the shadow, not the ability to shine through an object.

But, oh well, it will all be changed with the new light engine in iClone 6.

I'm glad I posted, since I was able to accidentally help others in the process.

That opacity setting is not for the light, but for the shadows. As the shadows get more opaque you see less of the objects within the shadows -- including, presumably, the light bleeding through the wall.

Depending on your light orientation, you may want to try reducing the range of the light, increasing the intensity to compensate.
