Hello,

Can someone please explain this particular segment in the Material editor, or point me to an article?

I've Googled for a while and I can't seem to find anything that explains what this section and its entries actually do to a surface and playing around didn't seem to yield any changes to the material.

Thanks in advance.

Those are maps used by substances if you want to create your materials inside CC/iClone.
Applying multiple materials by a Color ID map for instance, painting object edges if Curvature map is present... etc.
It can be used in CC for cloth or accessories. And in iClone while utilizing various substance tools.

Some of the resource maps are applied to all 3D block props by default.

I do not think there is a modern tutorial on the subject, but this one is older tutorial for iClone 7
And this is for CC 2.0  which should be applicable to current version as well but with different interface:

There maybe more tutorials on RL channel if you search for "substance".

So if I am understanding this correctly, I can use it to either create materials or do something like add dirt to an existing texture without having to modify the original base?

Essentially yes. A little effort to figure out how it's working altogether may require.
And there are a few small bugs here and there with loading/unloading Editor for specific items.
