I would recommend the Nvidia RTX 3000 series cards. It is the current generation, and gives the ray tracing option for Omniverse, UE4, and Unity if you ever want to try it. The 3060 you listed is a good choice.

Yes, stick with the RTX 3000 series.  While currently the higher end cards (the 3070/80 are particularly good choices) are almost unobtainable, this will not last forever.  Eventually the supply chain should catch up, even if it takes quite some time.  In the meantime you can always get something lesser and save your money.

Hey Kelly,

I am a bit more pessimistic than you regarding the newer 3000's. My experiences over the past year tell me that it doesn't matter. Buyers who buy bulk through Amazon, Best buy etc have apps that tell them when cards have arrived and they buy them and sell for twice the amount of the card or more. This is partially in reaction to Bit Coin farming and people who don't mind paying out the ying yang for GPUs. So far the only reasonably priced 3000s come through \computer manufacturers like Dell (alienware etc) The computer I built that lacks the 3000 is highend. But it's like a duck with one wing. It needs a 3000 for it to truly fly. No not out my window ;)

It's not just me -- tech experts have debunked the "bitcoin scarcity" myth.  It ain't that that's the problem, it's that the tech industry in general has been hard hit by low resources.  I don't have the time to go into the details, but it's worth reading about so do a search if you are interested (just stay away from the hysteria places that don't deal in actual facts but innuendo).

But the problem is the supply chain (which, again, affects far more than just GPUs) won't be resolved until the end of the year at the earliest.  This WILL result in things like the 3000 series becoming available (and at reasonable prices) but patience is in order.  In the meantime, a used card is your best bet as a stopgap measure (oddly enough, I currently have TWO 3090 cards in my computer room as I type this.  The even weirder fact is that they do not reside in any computer currently up and running.  Something which I hope to remedy in a week or two when time permits :>).

Ok I am officially Jealous now LOL <<<<   starts thinking... hmmmmm   2 3090s running in SLI hehe.

I am not going to bother tearing the 1080s (TIs) out of my old Rampage. (The ancient computer in my sig is still a beast and has been since 2011). I built it to last and it exceeded my expectations. Best computer I have ever put together. I have a feeling that my new one won't last as long.

You do have me curious now about what type of build you are going for.

My old Asus is a gaming mother board through and through but has served me well on creation also. The new one can sit til I get a 3090. I did buy a used Logitech G 13 for shortcut keys. Stll bothers me that Logitech got rid of one of their best products. I went for the Vison D motherboard because of thunderbolt 3. I also went air cooled for the first time in years. The cooler is awkward but if you have a large case is worth the hassle.

LOL - sorry, didn't mean to make you speculate needlessly.  In my case, my computer building days are LONG past (the last one I built was around three decades ago.  Maybe even before you were born :>).

These computers with the 3090 are the Alienware 12 computers - they come that way.  The first had an issue with the 3090 (I think the fan was bent) and thus Dell sent me another (which arrived today).  I most likely won't even set it up for another week or two - just too much to do right now and I'd prefer to have my new 38" curved Alienware monitor (which isn't due to arrive for a week or so).

However, here's an article outlining the real issue with GPUs right now - as I said, it's nothing to do with bit mining or folks hording.  It's just a matter of a whole lot of things which WILL get straightened out.  Eventually.  I may not be alive by that time, but I'm really, really old.

Damn , the RTX3090 has become so expensive ... I paid half of the price back in Dec 2020.

A while ago Mike already suggested that the only way to get an RTX 3090 would be to buy a PC with it...

I was going to build my own PC with a 3090, but giving the current price of the card (if you can get them), it would have been at least as expensive as buying a PC outright.

So I ordered an Alienware Aurora R12 as well (serendipitously at the same time as Mike) and received it fortunately without a bent GPU fan. It was an extravagant purchase, but I am quite pleased with it.

I read that too. I was arguing with my Brtother about this. But with a little Research you will find out its because of Corona, the lack of MAterials, and actually a Festival in China.
