So I was looking into buying iClone because of the new 3d to 2d motion feature in Cartoon Animator.  After looking more into iClone I become very angry.  This is why:

iClone Has Built in Video Compositing but This Feature Does Not Link with Cartoon Animator
I am sort of irritated because Reallusion spent all their time making their program work with Adobe when they offer a program with similar features.  If there was a plug-in similar to the one they have for Adobe, I would be able to have the benefits of 3d motion in iClone while being able to composite the videos.  I don't do a lot of video compositing because of the type of videos I make.  The feature would just be nice to have.

See this page in the manual:   Video Compositing in iClone

The UI of iClone is 1000x's Better
I watched a video detailing the UI of iClone and I was blown away.  Almost every feature I wanted in a UI was present in iClone.  Why can't we have such a nice UI in Cartoon Animator?

Features I Saw:
  • Workspaces
  • All windows could be docked
  • Search the Content Manager
  • Icons to quickly find the assets you want

The Smart Gallery
We were told this would come to Cartoon Animator in the December update.  I guess they changed their mind about this.  Why?!  This is the best way to sort through what you already own as well as purchasing new assets.  I guess not having this feature is keeping me from going broke.

I don't make 3d videos but after seeing all of this, I am wondering if I should continue to invest my money into Cartoon Animator.  I might buy a couple more packs to get everything I need to continue to do the projects I want.  I will need to figure out if there is a way to transition to iClone to do 2d Animation.  If anyone could let me know if you can easily do 2d videos in iClone, that would be appreciated.

To get the potential use of 3D motions for 2D characters, I am not sure whether purchasing iClone will be the next move.
I don't do animation with 3D characters.. I am not sure either if iClone will greatly help me in making more 3D motions for my 2D characters.
I have never use iClone before.

Thank you for the feedback Deborah. I will pass this on to the 2D team to review.

Please be assured development of Cartoon Animator continues and we have much planned for the future so some of your wishful features may well appear in future upgrades. :)

Do you know why the team decided not to add the Smart Gallery to Cartoon Animator?  From the videos, it looks like an awesome feature.

Smart Gallery is still scheduled to come to Cartoon Animator, but unlike iClone and CC, Cartoon Animator is for Windows and Macs so it is taking a little longer than we hoped to have it working on both OS's.

If you wish to share content between iClone and Cartoon Animator and have support for video backgrounds you can use the .popVideo format which is shared between both products. This would allow you to generate video from one product and then use it in the other as a video background, video textured prop etc.
