I have applied a walking motion to character.
I need the character to stop mid path, turn and walk in a slightly different direction.
Since this is mid path I need to release the character from the path?
When I click the release button it does create a keyframe and the constraint "line" is gone in the future frames- BUT- it sends my character all the way back to the beginning of the path!
key frame prior to release- my character is at position 71.5. After release is created- my character is shot back to zero on the path.
I tried creating a keyframe before the release frame. didn't do anything.
Tried breaking and deleting the remaining walk motion. nope.
Even if I could create a lag and then have him follow the path in reverse- I could live with that...but obviously I am missing a step here.

Thanks for any help!

Generally I do not like working with paths. Specially since the current Path implementation is quite buggy.
One annoying bugs, is inability to assign non-linear movement along the path (not sure at which point it got broken though).

Anyway, there are a few points which need to be followed. Most important, is when to apply the clip after the release and where.
Check the video out.

It also shows that non-linear assignment bug at the beginning, where character jumps to the end. If anyone knows solution or workaround let me know.

That was a great solution 4u2' suggested! Still we're all hoping for a better locomotion solution from RL.. PLEASEEEEEE!!!!!!:D
One thing I have used in the past, that might also be of use, would be to use a Dummy object on the path and then Link the Avatar to the Dummy. The Dummy moves along the Path with the Avatar ( moving in accordance to it's assigned walking animation or Puppet walk) linked to it. You will have to gauge the walk strides, to avoid foot sliding, by adjusting the Path's position points but you can un-link at any time as well. May work but still not perfect...

Thank you much- I'll give this a look.
I may have to duplicate the project file- get to that point- and literally cut to the other file when I take into edit- which seems insane as a workaround.
But I have that path under water- and it was a lot of work to make the transition to that moment smooth- so really hate to blow it off and start over.
I'm working in 6.5 pro right now- haven't jumped over to 7- so that may add to the problem- and a lack of skill doesn't help- very new to this software.
But will give it a go and thank you for the reply!

I've watched the example you gave over and over and cannot get this thing to work. Tried starting and stopping yours and followed along. It sends the character back every time and then speeds thru at the end. Wasted hours and hours on this to no avail. Can't get to the place he stops and then release him from that path. If it does releasae him it screws up the prior motions.
You advance a handful of frames- reset position to 0.1 . Then do the same thing- but your character keeps moving from that reset 0.1.
Mine goes all the way back to initial start.

@Mark
Thanks! Yes, the revision is due for a loooong time! ;)

@red/orange
This works in both IC7 and IC6. But you missed the important part. Before releasing, I copied the current value, which was 61.7. Then, when I released it, it did reset to 0.1.
Then I moved scrabber 1 frame to the left and applied that value manually and the character returned back to the point of break.
If you do not move scrabber one frame to the left and do not apply the value of release, it is never going to work.
Then I deleted whatever left on the right side from the path constraint, returned to the point of 61.7 and applied new clip there. Watch it carefully!
