Hello everyone. I hope you are keeping safe from the Corona virus. Social distancing is key.
Anyway, I have client in need of an advert to be created and aired on local television. The broadcaster explicitly specified that they need this advert delivered in 1080i (not 1080p) resolution, in 24fps.
For the FPS, i usually export from iClone at 60fps in png, then convert to 24fps in Hitfilm. Problem solved.
However, I do not know how to go about the video interlacing issue as I only saw 'progressive' scan in iClone export options. Please advice, thanks

Why 24fps? It's a frame rate for movies in cinemas. TV Stations run totally different framerates. In Europe it's 25 frames ( 50 interlaced frames) and in the US it's 29,97 frames per second. So, why 24?
And don't export your animation with 60 frames, just to cut it down to 24 via hitfilm. That's not the way. Just export your animation in the framerate you need. You can choose your desired framerate in iClone.

For the "interlaced" problem:
Just do your animation in 1080p and edit it in the same resolution. When you export your final movie, you can choose "interlaced" and so you will fit the criteria of the TV station ...

Thanks for the response. I really have no idea why they want that specific FPS, and I didn't ask. I recently started animation (11months ago) so most things are still new to me. All I know is, i put something together for fun (coronavirus awareness video) and posted it online. Someone saw it, liked it and now they want it tweaked a bit and televised.

Could you clarify a bit on the steps I need to take to achieve 1080i. Does it mean I need to render out of iClone as 1080p png 24fps, then import into hitfilm and convert it somehow to 1080i?

In Hitfilm when you render your final video (probably to MP4) there should be various render options. One should be interlaced. However, checking with Hitfilm 4, the export options are very limited and only non-interlaced (progressive) is available. The problem is that Hitfilm is not really a full-fledged video editor.

Do you have another video editor you can use? I have Vegas Pro, and it has a large variety of export options. It's not cheap, though, and I'm sure there are less expensive options.

However, the TV station should be able to take care of your non-interlaced video during the "ingesting" of the video. I have had my animations played on a local station and there never was any problem, as far as I know.

As I am no export on broadcast formats I looked it up here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-definition_television

Thanks animagic. I found out Hitfilm does not export interlaced video. The only workaround is to find a more capable video editor. It will hopefully be free.
In the meantime I'll enquire from the TV station, they might be able to bend their rules a bit.

I'm pretty sure there is no such thing as 1080i 24 fps.  NTSC interlaced is either 29.97 or 59.94.  If you're rendering PNG files from iClone you may as well render at 24 fps - your editor only throws away the frames it doesn't need when converting from 60 to 24 fps.  Davinci Resolve is also a professional video/sound editor now... so you can open your 24 fps video clip and export it as 29.97 interlaced (it uses 3:2 pulldown - the process used to convert 24fps films for broadcast TV).  There are other factors besides interlaced/frame rates when preparing for broadcast TV - if it's going to tape it needs to be YUV and your black point is 16 and white point is 235.  Frankly, you should just give them the animation and let them deal with it.

Personally, I'd render the iClone animation at 4K as 24fps PNGs.  I'd import the animation to Resolve, sync up the sound (and make the audio loudness read -23 LUFs), set the resolution to HD and export two versions as uncompressed AVI or QT... one at 23.976 and one at 29.97 interlaced.

I must say I get that a lot. I'd also say I may have misheard, but the man assisting me said those words and further went on to write them down on paper for me. His exact words on paper are:
"Resolution: 16:9 - 1080i. Make sure its is NOT 1080p.
Delivery in mp4, or mxf.
Audio peaks:  -10dB"

This crossed my mind once or twice. I've been trying to get hold of someone else at the station to assist me with the issue.

As for the video editor, I decided to shelve Hitfilm. I was caught between DaVinci Resolve and Vegas Pro. Online reviews pointed to VegasPro as being the easiest to learn, so I'm currently immersed in tutorial videos.

After days of research coupled with a lot of trial and error, I'm more than convinced that the DaVinci Resolve route is the way to go.
I'm a bit stuck on the interlace issue, and have failed to find instructions online. Could you please walk me through the process, or direct me to an online tutorial or something. Thanks in advance
