Why is "Activate Appearance Editor" grayed out when I select the default Avatar? When I select the clothes "Activate Appearance Editor" becomes interactive.

It's not yet available for the CC3 default characters (it's coming).

Can it be used on any other skin content purchased separately? like essential skin.

I'm having the same exact problem! I just purchased iClone 7, Character Creator and the Essentials Pack. The option is grayed out for every Character\Avatar I've selected including the CC1 and CC3. I purchased all this software so t hat I could customize character today as advertised in the videos.....
