Is it possible to use my old BVH files with iClone?

Just want to add the 3DX import never stopped working for me for non-standard either, so like Kellytoons, as long as I have been able to retarget effectively it has worked.

I'd love to know the workflow for exporting motion from iPi through 3dxchange to create imotions

It's pretty straightforward -- iPisoft produces BVH files by default (and I just use the default iPi Rig) and then in XChange you bring the BVH file in with the t-pose, go to "Convert to non-standard" and then match up the bones manually (you only have to do this once -- save your rig out so the next time you can just load it in).  One tip: make sure you align the feet and to the ground in the feet rollout checkmarks.  Then convert and save the resultant animation as a motion file (checkmark "Save Animation" but uncheck "Save Geometry").

Takes only a few seconds for each animation.  I usually clean up the results in iClone (because fingers aren't captured I often put hand gestures in, or I trim beginning and end or slightly adjust the body) and then resave as the same name.

Here's a driving animation I did recently using just one Kinect capture (as a rule I use two because it avoids problems with arm occlusions but a single Kinect capture works fine as long as you're facing forward):

Thanks for the tips, I'll have to download the ipi trial and see how it goes.

.

Just wanted to thank both of you guys for the feedback. I have been struggling with the Convert to Non-Standard problem from the release of Iclone7. I put in a "Feedback tracker" back in July. They worked on it and then put on tracker it was a resolved problem. I never received any feedback so I assumed it was a simple glitch in Xchange and would go out with 7.02 update,  after the feedback I received from you guy I figured it was a local problem related to the install and removal of the "pre-release" which others had. So reinstalled ( had issues so had to reinstall Iclone7 too).

Long story short. I now have Convert to Non-Standard back!
Thanks Guys!!!

Glad for you, Paul -- IIRC, I never did have the pre-release version installed, which probably explains it.

It's pretty annoying that having such a version prevents the release versions from installing correctly, though.  There ought to be something they could do about that.

Hi Mike,
Just tried out your Driving motion file.  It's uncanny, that's exactly how old people drive.  :)

Really very good capture, from one kinect v2? Did you add the hard gestures as keyframed poses in iclone?
Is one kinect V2 better than capturing with 2 kinect v1s.  Certainly easier to set up one rather than two.  I dont think my computer can handle two kinect v2s unfortunately.

Hey, I resemble that remark <g>.

Yep, added the hand gestures afterwards, pretty simple to do and only took a few minutes.  While having finger capture would be nice, I don't miss it all that much.

One Kinect works fine as long as you are careful not to cross your arms behind your body (occlude them).  Leg occlusion is handled much better (most likely because the feet aren't ever occluded).  And two Kinects will require two computers (because the MS API won't allow more than one).  You link them to the same network and the iPisoftware will handle the networking (it's pretty cool, really).  The only thing I don't care for when using two Kinects is the calibration (with one you don't have to calibrate, but with two you need to calibrate your workspace, using either a flashlight or a 2x3 foot card).  But the two Kinects perform *really* well, doing mocap that I do believe is better than even the suits (which don't have the cleanup software that iPisoft has).

I recently got into a discussion with an indy producer who had both the Neuron suit and Ipisoft and he found that under a time crunch he went to iPi every single time.  He said there just wasn't enough time to clean up the suit capture, while iPisoft was completely clean out of the box.  Obviously space is a consideration, but for most producers that isn't an issue (for me I use the dining area, which is an empty 10x12 foot space -- less space restricts you to just one Kinect.  More space and you can use the PS Eyes, which are cheap and can do a REALLY good job and will work even on one computer.  But you definitely need at least a 13x20 foot space, which I have in the garage but no where else, and in Florida that's a bit hot to work in for at least six months out of the year).
