What is the source of your 3DS character? Does it have a proper bone structure?
Normally when importing FBX into 3DXChange, if 3DXChange recognizes the bone structure (e.g. iClone, DAZ Studio, Maya, etc) it will automatically popup a dialog if you want to convert the import into a Non-Standard Talking Human or a Non-Standard Human. If it does not recognize the bone structure it brings it in as a "prop'. However, even if the bone structure does not match, all may not be lost. Click on the mesh of your character, then on the right hand side find the "Character" tab. Usually this tab will have buttons for converting to "Non-Standard Human" or "Non-Human".
Please note that if in 3DS you made only a mesh (but did not provide a bone structure) then your FBX will only have a mesh. In such a case, you should rig the mesh to a bone structure before importing. If you are planning on using a iClone bone structure then you can export one iClone character (using the free trail version of 3DXChange PIPELINE if your version if 3DXChange is only PRO) and then replace the original mesh with your new mesh.

Thanks LA I will try that. Ran into another problem with a model. I was able to import an Ironman model to 3dXc from Daz but part of the suit was not aligned properly. Below is the link to the suit. Hoping you can provide a work around to this http://inlitestudio.com/3d/product/ironman-suit/
