Sadly I’m already on the last of three rows.  The project participation was good, but sadly we had a couple people run into unfortunate circumstances.  Hopefully we’ll see them participate in the next project.

I (and others) always say the best part of the Pinhead projects is the participation.  And it is so true.  I have genuinely ENJOYED and APPRECIATED each and every project.  The variety is always so amazing; both in terms of technical approach (2D, 3D, camera work, editing, etc.) and storytelling (comedy, drama, and everything in between).

So without further ado…

Here are my comments for “Row 3”…

Mr. & Mrs. Pinhead by 3D Story
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlJia-KLXgs

You have some high standards to live up to, based on prior work we’ve seen.  Let’s just say you delivered once again.

I liked the black-and-white flash back at the beginning.  When Pinhead gets dragged away, and his arms move out, it shows a wonderful attention to detail.

The opening credit sequence was stunning.

I liked the way you “smudged” Alura’s skin, making it dirty.  Her big “escape move” was really cool.  Both the move itself, and the change between real-time and slow-motion.  It was very well done.

“Swipe to blow”?  An app to explode camel bombs?  That was funny.  And the camel head landing right by Pinhead after a pause, complete with one last bleat, was pretty funny.

Okay, it’s time to talk about your spin-off of Mr. & Mr. Smith.  The whole concept was brilliant and excellently executed.

I loved your music.  It was very effective and appropriate.

Line of the day… “Female assassins are hot.”  Followed by several other contenders, such as, “I knew she was feisty,” and “Katniss Everdeen?” and “She has a nice pair of… shoes,” and of course, “(Pinhead asks) Where did you hide that?  (Alura replies) Wouldn’t you like to know?”

Was that a bat?  Oh yeah, Pinhead’s wicked with a bat, isn’t he?

I like your dialogue that tied in with the original movie.  The way he calls her, “Baby” and the references to knives and cooking.  Truly a delight for fans of the original without being “in the way” or confusing to those who have not seen the original.

Thanks for a great entry.

Kidnapped by jlittle

Are you sure this is your first Pinhead entry?  It was great!  You sure found a creative way to reference a prior project, which was a real tribute to that project since you hadn’t participated in it.

I’ve commented on funny lines for other entries, especially some funny “villain” lines.  But your phone conversation with Pinhead and the villain make me laugh every time.  Each time the phone rings you just wonder, “What’s going to happen this time?”

Best line:  “Or else!”  Lots of lines vying for second place.

I loved Pinhead driving through the desert, looking for the lamp.  Just when you figure he’s done, he comes driving past again.  Sometimes you have to do something “too much” to make a joke out of it, but you don’t want to overdo it and ruin the fun.  You got it just right.

The whole idea of tricking the villain to not have his wish overheard was a strong of absolute brilliance.  Pinhead and the genie collaborating; who would have guessed?  And Pinhead even got his place fixed up as a gift; that was a nice touch.

So Pinhead was breaking Alura’s things, just so he could go to her place to fix them?  Sly dog.  I’m so happy Alura has noticed him and appreciates him now.  Holding hands at the end.  Awww, that’s so sweet.

Thanks again for participating, and I’m already impatiently looking forward to your next video.

The Measure of a Man by Justaviking
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n23MJ3jaKtM

Should I comment on my own video?  Oh sure, why not.

My number one thing I’m happy with is that I was able to pull off (I think) the concept of using some of my favorite music to help tell the story.  It made for some interesting challenges in the writing, but that was part of the fun.

There are three animations I’m most proud of.  One is Alura interacting with the Villain, such as when he holds her hand to his heart.  Another is Pinhead on the ledge, especially going around the corner and his foot slipping.  The other is when Alura gets up to crawl to Pinhead after the hit-and-run incident.  (The “crawling” segment is where I had a crash while saving, so I had to redo most of that a second time, and I think parts of it were smoother the first time, but I’m still pleased with it.)

Favorite line?  Maybe when Viking says, “Just move on,” and "Let the other dude have her."  I’ve had good “shock combined with laughter” reactions to that.

I could fill pages with “critique” but I wanted to keep these posts focused on the positive, so I’ll apply that same standard to my entry as well (until after the voting).

Thanks again to everyone.  I’ve thoroughly enjoyed each and every entry.  You should all be very proud of your work.

I always feel like every entry deserved pages of praise (and we all know I'm capable of typing that much).  It's also hard to type the same amount for each entry, but due to varying lengths and other considerations, it's impossible to type the same number of words for each entry.  But that doesn't necessarily imply that I liked one video more than the other.

Here are my comments for "Row 2"...

Pinhead in the One Million Dollar Man by RB3006
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJpzahRY05Q

This is another entry with beautiful sets highlighted with very nice lighting.  As I've mentioned multiple times before, that is something I've really come to appreciate.  I didn't get it done in my project, but maybe next time.

I really enjoyed the “title overlays” that are inserted from time-to-time.  Very amusing, and they add a very fun and lighthearted style to the video.

Lots of nice little details, like the mice crossing the street and Pinhead nervously wiggling his fingers (1:35).

He looks much more manly riding the scooter in this movie than he does in mine.  Maybe it’s the tuxedo and James Bond music.

You sure put in a lot of background characters.  The really enhanced the scenes.  Lots of wonderful props, too, like the roulette wheel and things on the desks in the casino office.

I still say “Junior” is the creepiest and most disturbing bad guy in Project 8.  And speaking of disturbing, I have to admit Pinhead’s conscience “Waltraud” sort of grew on me.

Pinhead picking out an outfit to wear (9:30-10:00) was a riot, especially his final selection.

The pool table was a nice addition, especially when it distracts Pinhead from him mission.  He’s such a Pinhead.

And a romantic ending.  A great ending to a great entry.

Be Careful What You Say by The Mythical Dragon
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDlGP6TheiM

The number one thing I have to say is… this is one of those videos you have to immediately watch a second time.  The revelation that Pinhead is Alura’s father was so touching, and that makes the video so different to watch the second time through.  As a parent, I found it to be very touching and had to immediately show it to my wife.  Then I had to email my daughters and tell them to watch it.

Specific moments of delight begin with Pinhead “Singing in the rain.  “La la la.”

All the voice acting was wonderful, yours included.  All your kids should be very proud of their contribution.  (I think your villain has the second-best evil laugh in the competition.  The funny thing about my villain is he really laughs like that in normal conversation, and that scares me now.)

Lots of great writing.  I really liked the contrast between the villain’s “narration” and Pinhead’s klutzy behavior.  “Are we talking about the same Pinhead?  He couldn’t find his way out of a cardboard box.”

The tie-in with Lord of the Rings was very well done.  The “most precious” ring was very funny.  You even had the right “look” for the titles.

And then of course when Pinhead saves Alura it is very touching.  Alura crying over him after the explosion is very emotional, and very well acted by your daughter.

Perdu est Disparu (Perdu is Missing) by Ahroo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vjBKdLsoW4

I appreciate your conviction regarding violence against women.  As the father of three grown daughters I can understand that.

Thank you for keeping 2D Pinhead alive.  Your entries are always appreciated, and I know I am not alone in looking forward to them every time.

You sure did write a mystery of international scope.  I like your cast of unique and interesting characters.  Nice music choices, too.  They really enhanced the various settings.  That was nicely done.

I like the way Pinhead gets in over his head, trying to masquerade as a dog groomer, and that shivery dog in the background makes me laugh every time.  Alura was quite clever to make Pinhead’s grooming disaster look like a new fad.

You also did a wonderful job with all the costumes.  You duplicated Alura’s “Project 8” shirt, and even Pinhead’s dog-grooming shirt had his logo on it.

A Blast from the Past by RogRead
http://vimeo.com/99423485

Ah, Roger, a truly classic 2D Pinhead.  Thank you.

I like the way he talks out loud to himself, sharing all this thoughts with us.  I really deviated from that stereotypical personality trait in my entry, so I really enjoyed and appreciated you having it in your video.

The reference to Mystery Manor was so wonderful.  Since I also brought back a character (Viking) from that project, I took extra delight.  Pinhead tiptoeing through the kitchen reminded me of him sneaking around the theater in my project, so I found that particularly amusing.

The argument over Digit and John Doe was funny.  (People who are newer to Pinhead should go back and see some of those Mystery Manner entries.)

You wrote one of the best conversations between Pinhead and the kidnapper:

  • Pinhead:  “How do I know you’ll let her go?”
  • Kidnapper:  “You have my word as a gentleman and a kidnapper.”
  • Pinhead:  “Oh, that’s good enough for me.”

Thanks again for a classic entry.

Kidnapped by Colour
http://vimeo.com/99550055

Another entry with a strong and distinctive personality.  Colour brings such a unique style to the Pinhead projects.

I like the idea of masquerading as the villain.  Very clever way to get some money.  The running joke with Boo was pretty funny too, especially the way Pinhead pauses and looks right into the camera to talk directly to us.  A favorite line is, “It’s a pity he didn’t do that earlier; he could have extinguished the fire.”

Nice, happy music.  The opening music was wonderful, and then was exceeded by the perfect carnival music.  I should just play that in the background from time to time.  I think it’s physically impossible to listen to that music and be in a bad mood at the same time.

All the carnival rides were wonderfully done.  The bright colors lit up my monitor in such a delightful way.  Somehow, and I don’t know how, I immediately knew Pinhead and Boo were wearing parachutes when they were on the Ferris Wheel.

I know you struggled with all the avatars on the various rides, and I’m glad you got it to work.  It all looked great.

The way they captured the villain in the animal cart was a perfect ending.

Thanks for thinking of Mike in your credits.

Hello everyone,

The online vote is almost ready. As we don't have expensive sophisticated software (okay so we use free stuff - :P) sometimes things don't always co-operate but longcross has been working hard getting it ready."

Various categories now Posted here; http://www.pinheadhq.com/GPAs/gpa_Kidnapped.php

Thanks, Viking, for your comments and for taking the time to critique our entries.

You're very welcome.  It was my pleasure.

I have the impression that this "contest" is special because of the camaraderie and the willingness to help each other out.

Agreed.  :)

I'm sorry that we lost several participants due to various circumstances, but I think we still ended up with solid collection of clips. As Colour commented in another thread, there is often too much discussion about technique and not enough about story. Here we see iClone in action as story-telling tool.

Very well said.

I'm leaving for vacation on Monday, but I'll try to vote somehow. If voting is open for a while then I will be able to do it from my destination.

I hope you have a great time, and come home with some stories to share.  Travel safely and have fun.

Hello community,

I can't wait for the voting to begin. It'll be a difficult decision either way. Again, to those of you that have contributed to the Pinhead Kidnapped Project8 competition, congratulations. Sorry if I have not commented on any entries at present. I find, if you don't mind me saying, all the entries for this years competition are of high standard and I'm sure Pinhead will be proud to star in each and everyone of your videos.

So congratulations everyone xo.

Peace

Gerskey

Here are some comments I have for "Row 1"...

Kidnapped by pinuintje
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=db59t5B4k_E

You might be the first person to have an on-screen narrator.  That was a unique and creative addition.

Very nice rain, complete with lightning and sound (rain and thunder).  I liked that the rainstorm sound continued in the background even after he got into the house.

Nice helicopter prop.  Wow, Pinhead is rich.  Cool.  I liked the way you have people open doors at the touch of a button.  That was a nice solution for animating an avatars interacting with props.

The “blub blub blub” sound when the helicopter sunk was so sad.  A nice touch, but so sad.

Great plot twist, seeing Alura in Villain’s arms.  Great second plot twist of it being a dream.

The “swimming Pinhead” at the credits was very whimsical and made me smile.

Pinhead to the Rescue - Saving Alura by Gregsin (develsden)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQxfYQetV5w

Such a beautiful opening shot.  Patient camera work.  Wonderful set.

I love your reference back to the “Final Wish” project.  Pinhead turned out to be very clever, wishing for his very own genie.

Very good animation of Alura tied up and struggling.

I think my favorite part was Pinhead’s progression of better and better transportation.  Walking, then a child’s tricycle, then a bike, and finally an ice cream truck.  Very funny.  I loved it.

Speaking of loving it… “I love ice cream.”  Funny line.

Speaking of lines… excellent voice acting throughout.

Good background sounds and music.  Very good camera work and editing too.

Lastly, I enjoyed the surprise at the end, where Alura is Pinhead’s genie.  Didn’t recognize her in her “civilian” clothes.

Kidnapped by Lynn
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srUi0Xreg1s

It’s always a delight to see the different styles people bring to their project, and this one had such a happy feeling to it, enhanced by the cheerful background music.

You did a great job of telling a story without dialogue.  Villain in the car with the photograph.  Pinhead, the incurable romantic, with his heart beating as he meets a new girl.  That variety of styles and techniques is one of the wonderful aspects of these projects.

I like the way Pinhead saves the day, using every tool at his disposal.  In this case, an ice cream cone.

How many cops got out of that police car?  That was pretty funny.

A romantic slow-motion run toward a warm embrace.  Awww, so sweet.  You never know how things will end up with Pinhead, but this time he gets the girl.  Yay!

The Diabolical Dimensional Dilemma by Granny J
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dGCB3dHlKM

When the clip starts with such a strong alliteration, you can expect you’re about to be entertained.

Pinhead’s narration was nicely done.  Clever solution to the “dirty face” issue.

The whole story concept was extremely unique and creative.  You did a wonderful job of presenting it in your video.  The villain isn’t actually the villain.  That was a fun twist.  Having Alura’s dad show up was a good surprise too.

Nice musical selections.

The Lost Client by animagic
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YY3Xfv1Dnek

The number-one thing that stood out to me in your clip was the “production quality” of the video.  The richly decorated sets and the lighting were stunning.  The sheer quantity of high-quality items in your sets was mind boggling.  I think that stood out to me even more than usual because “lighting and set design” was something I wanted to work on in my own entry (but once again, did not).

Very good looking Pinhead.  I think you gave your avatar a make-over, right?

The kidnapper watching cartoons.  Very stereotyped, and also very funny.

I liked the story too.  Alura was a client, and part of a much larger plot.  Pinhead and his “assistant” Franciska  get together at the end.  That was wonderful.

Timing can be a funny thing.  For several days, I’ve been intending to re-comment on each of the videos.  Since we haven’t voted yet, I guess there’s still time.

I’m going to do one post for each “row” on the Project 8 web page.

I’m going to do “positive-only” comments.  What were some of my favorite parts, or things I thought were particularly well done.  After the voting is done, if any of the creators want constructive criticism I’ll be happy to share additional thoughts.

SPOILER ALERTS…  I’m going to assume everyone has seen all the videos at least once, so I don’t have to worry about ruining surprises.

I’ll be rendering a WMV formatted file for uploading to the Project 8 website this weekend.  Hopefully I don’t overheat the internet.
