Hi All,
This is very much a newbie question, so I hope I'm in the right place. There seems to be quite a bit of talk about importing from Daz, especially with the release of 5.4. Having never used Daz, I'm trying to understand the benefits of developing characters there and then importing into iClone.
Similarly with sketchup, which I have used a little, is there any advantage to creating objects in sketchup and then importing to iClone? And then there are various other programs such as Maya, and so on. I'm really trying to get an overview of how best to use these programs in order to get the most efficient workflow, and the best end result.
Cheers, SuchStuff

The best advice is to give Daz a try and see for yourself. The diversity of characters you can make using Genesis in Daz is pretty amazing.

I'd like to use Daz characters in iclone but I'm just not a very technical guy when it comes to bone-rigging and all the rest of it, I'm more of a story-teller than an animator. I really would like to use the Daz monsters (trolls, dragons etc.) more than the human characters because reallusion has nothing that even comes close to realistic looking fantasy monsters. I can change the reallusion humans to achieve about whatever I need but creatures have been totally neglected. That being said the new facial rig is pretty exciting and I hope to pick it up soon, finances willing. I'm watching the tuts on how to do all of this and hope I eventually figure it out well enough to try one. :doze: (Good luck Pete) pete

Thats not an easy question to answer. DAZ due to its nature has high poly, high definition models where iClone started as a low poly animation engine making the DAZ characters very attractive but with the knowledge that you will only be importing a few of them at most in any scene due to the high poly count unless you use a decimator of some sort to optimize the mesh.
Studio Max, Maya and Sketchup are all great 3D modeling programs with the first two being a little more versatile and high end. They are used in motion picture production among other things.
If you are completely new to this then I would pick one and download the free version (student if necessary) to learn. Sketchup maybe easier to learn and pick up the basics of 3D with but it is a little different than other mainstream 3D applications like Max or Maya.
All have their advantages and disadvantages. The most efficient workflow for me is Max or zBrush, 3DXchange Pipeline into iClone. For others it a different mixture and only experience will tell you which is best and I would recommend you learn all three over time if at all possible.

Thanks for the replies. I'll have a play around with some of the other programs and see how it goes.

Should I be thinking about getting this Introductory Content Pack? I don't quite understand where it fits into the picture.
