I exported from Poser Pro 2010 an character as an obj and opened in 3DXchange4.  However, the "Convert to Character" button is greyed out.  Please explain what I am doing wrong.  I've read the manual and I thought that I followed the steps. Could someone explain, in simple terms, the steps in converting an obj from Poser to an iClone character.

Thanks in advance for any help

Hi sjonesdc,
the reason why it is not working is because you need to export your character from Poser as a FBX file not an OBJ.
When you export the character as an OBJ, the bone information gets lost. thats why you cant turn it into an character for iclone. And BTW you need the pro version of 3Dxchange 4 to import FBX.

Hope this helps,

Stuckon3d,

I've looked at Poser again and I did not find the fbx extension for saving or exporting.  Am I missing something????

Poser Pro 2010 doesn't export to FBX sadly. If you have Daz Studio and the FBX exporter then you can use this to get Poser models with bones into 3DXchange4.

Peter,

Thank you for the info.

I remember seeing a separate. FBX plug-in for the poser pro version when the first one came out, is smithmicro still the principal owner of poser? Check their website, the plug-in was 99 bucks. If remember correctly.

Edited: I just looked at their site and that plugin is not available anymore. Sorry. Sad

Poser's big sister, DAZ Carrara Pro, can import Poser characters and can export to FBX.

Carrara Pro 6 was give away free recently on the 3D Artist cover-disc. Number 12, May 2010. With a plugin Carrara can also import and apply complex aniMate+ motion blends from DAZ Studio.

I would be interested to hear of anyone who has successfully exported a DAZ character, so as to preserve DAZ's animation clips as working Perform.... commands in iClone. Apparently is is possible to export "baked" motions from Carrara as BVH. Would this be a roundabout route to get the animations back onto the DAZ figures in iClone?

Hi

Yes , motions are exported with the DAZ studio fbx plugin . You can add into 3dxchange the perform command , each motion make in the timelime into DAZ studio . Convert to non-human character and in iclone right-clik with perfom command . Ex : zebra free model

I hope to have understand your question , with my bad english .

Yes I also can confirm that the fbx out of Daz into 3dex4 works very well. This was the route I used some 18months ago via max using Daz fbx export to get my elephant into iClone with the max plugin.
