I exported from Poser Pro 2010 an character as an obj and opened in 3DXchange4.  However, the "Convert to Character" button is greyed out.  Please explain what I am doing wrong.  I've read the manual and I thought that I followed the steps. Could someone explain, in simple terms, the steps in converting an obj from Poser to an iClone character.

Thanks in advance for any help

Hi sjonesdc,
the reason why it is not working is because you need to export your character from Poser as a FBX file not an OBJ.
When you export the character as an OBJ, the bone information gets lost. thats why you cant turn it into an character for iclone. And BTW you need the pro version of 3Dxchange 4 to import FBX.

Hope this helps,

Thanks stuckon3D.  This area is all new to me.  And yes I have the pro version.

Stuckon3d,

I've looked at Poser again and I did not find the fbx extension for saving or exporting.  Am I missing something????

Poser Pro 2010 doesn't export to FBX sadly. If you have Daz Studio and the FBX exporter then you can use this to get Poser models with bones into 3DXchange4.

Peter,

Thank you for the info.

Peter,

Thank you for the info.

I remember seeing a separate. FBX plug-in for the poser pro version when the first one came out, is smithmicro still the principal owner of poser? Check their website, the plug-in was 99 bucks. If remember correctly.

Edited: I just looked at their site and that plugin is not available anymore. Sorry. :(

Poser's big sister, DAZ Carrara Pro, can import Poser characters and can export to FBX.

Carrara Pro 6 was give away free recently on the 3D Artist cover-disc. Number 12, May 2010. With a plugin Carrara can also import and apply complex aniMate+ motion blends from DAZ Studio.

I would be interested to hear of anyone who has successfully exported a DAZ character, so as to preserve DAZ's animation clips as working Perform.... commands in iClone. Apparently is is possible to export "baked" motions from Carrara as BVH. Would this be a roundabout route to get the animations back onto the DAZ figures in iClone?

Hi

Yes , motions are exported with the DAZ studio fbx plugin . You can add into 3dxchange the perform command , each motion make in the timelime into DAZ studio . Convert to non-human character and in iclone right-clik with perfom command . Ex : zebra free model

I hope to have understand your question , with my bad english .

Yes I also can confirm that the fbx out of Daz into 3dex4 works very well. This was the route I used some 18months ago via max using Daz fbx export to get my elephant into iClone with the max plugin.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

I thought that this would be "easy", but it appears that I need to do a lot of studying and tinkering.

I'm feeling a little frustrated because what I want to do I can't do NOW and real life gets in the way.

Please forgive the rant there is so much to learn and not enough time!!!!

hello

Wouldn't it be "easier" to just use poser and or daz without bringing it into iclone.  That seems to be the better route to take.  hey, but that's just me! :D

Could you just green-screen in Poser or DAZ, then use popVideo to get it into iClone? Admittedly, you'd have to render the video first - which might take a few days!

Thanks Pamera and peteradam for your suggestions for using Poser and Daz. These are two programs that I've looked and dabbled a little bit with their interfaces however, I found them to be a little harder for me to get around. FOR ME, iClone seems to be more user friendly and easier FOR me to understand. I don't even want to do anything with popvideo YET!

Thank you again. :P

Maybe I'm putting the cart before the horse:crazy:

Yes, I use Daz3 pro and Poser 8 and you can bring to poser figure into daz and with Daz FBX plug in. The plug in will cost you from daz and it works quit well with Iclone Exchange. The problem I have with it. You can not transfer the character with clothing on. The clothing comes out a mess. Maybe someone can help me out there. What good is transferring Actor if you cannot get cloths on them. Props are great in transferring to exchange then to Iclone 4 pro.

Does someone have any answer for transferring the cloths for Daz Figures.

Just wondering if you saw this thread   https://forum.reallusion.com/Topic50434-161-1.aspx

I bought the bundle but haven't tried it yet. It not only will bring everything over but in a poly count that will work better in iClone.

you could export from poser to 3d studio...then use the 3d exchange

I'm having problems with exporting Poser character to Iclone. I have a character that is requiring Victoria 4 in Poser and when I open/ make it in Poser it looks like this

I save it as Poser project file and then when I open it in Daz 3d it looks different, like on photo below

What should I do to make it look the same in Daz3D as it looks in Poser?
By Peter (RL) - 16 Years Ago
Hi Pochontas,

From the images it looks like the morphs are not loaded into Daz Studio. Daz Studio can open your Poser content (just add your Poser Runtime in Daz Studio) so why not open the character directly in Daz Studio.

To do this in Daz Studio you can do the following. Open V4, then apply the V4 Morphs and then your character. It should then look the same as your Poser version.

Thanks! I thought that was the reason but I just didn't know how to do it but I followed your instruction and I made it.

But of course there is another problem. It takes forever and ever to load in 3dxchange. What can I do to lover poly count or something?
By Pochontas - 16 Years Ago
It's a strange problem.

I open Daz 3d and as you can see on pic below that on left menu I have two 'content' folders

And when I click on lower one I get 'figures', 'poses' etc. I click on 'figures' and 'daz people' i open Victoria 2 and it opens quickly and if i want to export it as fbx it goes whiteout problems and it opens in 3dxcnage quickly. But when I go step backward in same lower 'content' folder and click 'poses' i get those alien morphs but whenever i click on them she won't turn into an alien she only changes her skin color.

Then I go on upper 'content' folder and open Victoria 2. She opens slowly but when i click on 'poses' she turns into alien with no problems. But when I export it as fbx file I can't open it in 3dxcnage no matter how much i wait.

I'm trying to open prop file (.pp2 extension) for Poser in Daz studio but when I open it there are no textures on it. I tried putting file in the same folder with texture files but still nothing. Anyone know how to solve this problem?
By animagic - 15 Years Ago
Other than with iClone, where everything is in a single file, a Poser pp2 file is a library file with references to other files. Just now, I tried importing a Poser file I had copied from another system and it couldn't find a texture file, but DAZ complained that it couldn't find the file. If you can import the pp2 file and you don't get any messages complaining it should show up. Moving the file itself or moving the textures won't help, because the references will be off. If the file shows correctly in Poser, then it should show correctly in DAZ if it is the same file. I'm opening my Poser content from my Poser directory, as I believe the DAZ content manager is a complete disaster.

Anyway, as a last resort, you can open the pp2 file in a text editor such as Notepad and this will tell you where the textures are supposed to be. These are either directory paths relative to the Poser runtime or absolute directory paths. In my case an absolute path was incorrect but the same problem would have occurred in Poser.

Of course, I'm not an expert. A quick search revealed that for more complicated texture/shader setups there may cause problems. Did you try the DAZ forum?

By Pochontas - 15 Years Ago
Yeah you're right. It also doesn't have textures when I open/ install it in Poser. And no I haven't tried on Daz forums yet and thanks.
