Hi all,

I am certain this must be easy to do, but after searching here, searching Facebook groups, and rewatching an hour of tutorials, I still can’t figure out how to mirror a character to be facing the other direction.

I previously asked someone if a character can be flipped and was told yes and given an image, but I didn’t ask how at the time.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike;
Select the character you want, go to the tool bar, click on the two arrowheads facing each other, one outlined one filled. Done. It also does vertical flips.

Hi...thank you. Can you do the same in iclone? I know you can do it as a pose but what about when you have animation like two people dancing together?

Hi Charles

For iClone questions please try to post them in the iClone forum rather than here in the Cartoon Animator forum which has a different user base.

However, to answer your question, iClone doesn't need a flip button for characters because characters in iClone are 3D and can be rotated to any angle you want. But for motion clips you can't flip these but you will find that most motion clips intended for two people such as talking, hugging or dancing will come with both the right and left side versions so you can apply them to both characters.

Hi Group

Further to this old question, am I correct in saying that if your character has an obviously asymmetrical element to their clothing, say a name badge or shirt logo/number (e.g., in the case of a sportsperson), that you'd need to create a whole new character with their clothing reversed so when you flipped it to a pose/action going back the other way the words etc that were on the clothing weren't reversed?

Thanks for any confirmation and/or point in the right direction.

Unfortunately if you use clothing that has badges or logos on one side then they will appear to change to the other side when using Flip. Obviously if you plan on using Flip then it is best not to use any asymmetrical clothing if you can, or as you have already surmised, you will need to have two characters, one facing left and one facing right.

Tip: If your character has a prop attached to one hand this will also appear to switch to the other hand when using Flip. A good way to work around this is to have the same object in both hands to start with and then make one invisible. Then when you use Flip you can make the other prop visible and hide the first one. This will give the effect of the attached prop staying in the correct hand.
