A Chance to Hide by Ben Tuttle - " After a major world-wide event, Daniel and Katie try to escape for shelter but trouble soon encounters them." Here's a chance to live (vicariously) 5 minutes in the apocalypse. Ben is a well versed filmmaker with plenty of experience with voice actors and both of these areas shine with good editing and camerawork and solid voice acting from the cast. A bit visually dark and the sound design was nice but lacked a bit of the dynamic highs and lows (the loud sound effects felt a touch muted while the quieter moments were a bit muddy). With no real beginning and no end its truly a "5 minutes in the life" scenario and that worked for me seeing what Ben could accomplish in this setting. The Dutchman's Gold by Greg Sinclear - "This is my latest animation, an adventure story set in early 1940."I love Greg Sinclear's Thunder Alley Productions. From hunting Bigfoot, telling ghost tales and bringing Steinbeck's Tin Pan Alley to life Greg pumps out well made entertaining tales at a impressive pace. With "The Dutchman's Gold" Greg serves up a legitimate Indiana Jones style adventure with a script that kept me fully immersed in the story and not staring at the runtime (20 minutes). Voice actors feel professional (I think he once said he uses community actors) with actual acting in the performances. Also loved the fluid animations and effects work, particularly watching various bad guys meet their end in the booby traps. All in all its a super fun production that had me smiling out loud throughout.

Scream in the Night by Iclonecartoonstory - "An unexpected midnight encounter with horror in quite calm circumstances. In the darkness of the night and more intoxication, blood and encounter with the unknown follow."Here's one I missed when we were picking flicks for the Halloween thread. Its a nice 2-minute piece of candy corn with some pretty good facial gestures. Has a strange plastic sheen over everything and a simplicity in the set design that kinda works well for this. Also liked the herky jerky way the guy stumbles down the hallway (even if it may or may not have been on purpose). Will have to add it next hallows eve to the watchlist. Here's a bit of sci-fi/horror with some incredibly detailed sets, lighting, effects and elaborate costumes. Camerawork is a mixed bag too often focusing on highlighting the props and sets instead of telling the story. The basic story gets across without dialog and the music (credited to the director) is well done. With all the ominous music I found myself wishing for a more horrific/supernatural adversary but the cliffhanger ending was pretty cool (and an impressive effects trick as well). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYpb4oV0mo4

They Are Here by Neil Tucker - "Set in the not too distant future a small band of renegades fight back against the overlords draconian parking regulations" They Are Here is an impressive project that checks a lot of boxes in what I want to see in an IClone feature. Voice actors, check. Sound design, check. Set and character design all look very nice but the thing that really caught my eye was the mix of live action and IClone 3d that is at times quite impressive. Live action videos with wind blowing through the trees is mixed with giant robots run amok looking to punish the CG characters. The effect works very well in the most of the scenes and is a definite highlight. While I found the premise to be ripe for satire (a parking ticket too far) I thought the story involving the characters was a bit lacking. Still, the amount of time and effort put into the project is evident and those looking to match real world imagery with cg should take note.

Cirque du Cimetiere by Tom Jantol - "My entry for Reallusion's short movie contest. Entirely made of 2D photos, thanks to magnificent software "Cartoon Animator 4". This one is a Cartoon Animator 4 short but I'm a big fan of Tom Jantol's visual poetry so I'm there. Here Tom gives us a rollicking circus in the cemetery full of iron jesters, harlequin and clowns, performing rabbit and giant pogo fish rides. My favorite aspect of this incredibly short (1:08) treat is the layered approach giving depth to the the scenes and the transition/editing between the crazed images. She is Hulk Girl by IcloneCartoonStory - "This is a short film from the HULK comic book universe. The movie was created with IClone." I started watching this one and quickly realized I was familiar with the director (see "Scream in the Night" below). The corridor and shiny surfaces were the first giveaway but also the very good expressions and impressive style is shown in both flicks. This one holds up even better than "Scream" with a good creepy beginning that heads in a different direction by the end. My only real qualms are that the title gives away the would be twist and the ending left me wanting more (usually a good sign for the director.). A Glint of Hope by Job Michiel van Zuijlen - "One day, a man, mourning the death of his young-departed wife, finds unexpected consolation at her gravesite."This relatively simple and short poetry reading offers up something we rarely see in an Iclone movie - emotion. And it does so quite well with excellent sound design, subtle camera play (the slight camera jitter worked for me) and colors that brighten as the overall tone of the video does the same.
