they could turn it into a cue button tho.
example of usage -
when you hit cue....it jumps to a user defined marker on the part of the animation you are focusing on ...your clip is 20 seconds long...and you want to focus on a walk cycle at 10 seconds without having to change project start / end markers.
cue - rewinds / cues up to cue marker.
Control / Cue - toggles cue off and on - functions as basic stop button when off cue.
shift / cue - marks playhead location.
i miss the stop button myself, more out of habit than anything, and I agree on it's redundancy, but it could in fact be repurposed to be a useful tool in the workflow for isolating and or looping sections of your animations that need fine tuning without having to change the start / end markers of the project itself.
