Hi I have been working on this for a couple of days now and I just cant seem to get my head around it.
All I wanted to do is get my character to turn the handle on an old gramaphone. I have recreated the handle so it is in two parts (the knob and the metal handle).
I have put a hinge constraint on the handle so it rotates (Ill change the speed and direction when i can get it to work)
I have tried linking, attaching to the knob, to a dummy, and the blue ball reach effector, and no matter what I do I keep getting a similar result or the hand just doesnt follow the rotation of the handle at all.
I have even tried repostioning the pivot point as i saw in a youtube video but that didnt solve the problem.
Am I missing something. I always seem to have problems with reach effectors ect.
Here is a quick snippit of the problem.
The rotation stops at one point, im assuming that is something to do with it coliding with the arm or something.

But the wooden knob is static in your video. In real live it should spin in opposite direction your handle is spinning. Right?
Or it should slide inside the hand. But since it's attached to the hand firmly with reach effector (cannot slide), then it must spin.
Just rotate it to the same amount of degrees as the handle, but with opposite sign and everything should fall in place.

So again... Attach knob to the handle, attach reach effector to the knob (or Link it if you would like to animate the process of grabbing and releasing the knob).
Both knob and handle must have pivot set to the center of their respective rotation axis.

There I put a little demo together...

Your the man yet again....
Thank you.
I have followed your instructions but it still doesnt look like yours. I must admit I thought the rotation of the knob may be the problem which is why i recreated it in blender as two different entitys. So at least I was sort of on the right track.
Ive sent a link to my new attempt with the dummy visible. I also tried editing the pivot position of it to try and line up the hand better but as you can see it doesnt follow like yours. The reach effector attaches to the wrist in IC7 and I do believe that in IC8 it works so much better but unfortunately IC8 wont work on my computer so im stuck with IC7 for the time being. Please take a look you may be able to gihure out where my mistake lies.

You actually do not need to use physics at all for this. Just attach the knob to the handle and in the attach properties set it to not inherit rotation. It will then stay in the same orientation as it travels around with the crank rotation.

I took another look at it from a different angle and may have figured out my problem.
On both yours and 4u2ges test your charcter is standing perfectly upright. on mine he his leaning forward in the scene a little. At some points the character needs to lean forward becasue the arm cant reach the knob so I have  had another look in a totally different file and tried it and it sort of works. It will take a lot of tweaking in the characters animation but i think i might be able to get it to work. Unless there is an easier way to make the character lean forward more when the arm reaches its full length (If you see what I mean)
Take a look.

Its only a quick test, i think if i take my time an really think about how it should look it may be ok
Any ideas

That looks great. To make a more natural motion, animate him bending over using the motion layer, so he does not need to reach as far. Then straighten him back up when he lets go of the crank.

Good catch Rampa, I always forget about those properties in Attach Smile
But generally yes, it does look good now, just a little tweaking in the initial linking I suppose.
