This is a quick example explainer I made in CreateStudio using their default characters as an example.

The video is composed of:

  1. A png background created with 3D assets
  2. mov files of 3D animated props
  3. move files of a 3D animated character in 3 several different animation loops.

I want to replace the default assets with my own. I have the trial of both the iClone 7 and Character creator trial. I am having a hard time making this scene a reality with my own assets.

  1. To generate the png background, I can use a program like Vectary to create the 3d assets and background. I can then save the background as png. Would I then import the background into iClone, Character Creator, or directly into CreateStudio?
  2. To create the 3D props since I don't have 3DExchange, I would have to create them in iClone using props, correct? Is this possible without using a sculpting program?
  3. How do I create a cartoon character? Then what do I do after I create the cartoon character? Do I animate it in Character Creator first and then import to iClone? Do I directly import into iClone and animate in Character Creator? Since there is no option to download mov files, do I put a green screen behind the character?
Additional questions I have (I can't find official tutorials that answer these questions):
  1. How do I make props in iClone look cartoony? Everything looks too realistic.
  2. How do I make the characters look cartoony without purchasing the pack? They look too realistic.
  3. There is a video on a promo page showing a realistic-looking woman character being turned into a cartoon character. There is also an ad saying this can be done in a few minutes. Is there a tutorial on how to do this?

If you have the .PNG file just Right Click and Drag the image into iClone. You will then be prompted on how you wish to use it. If you choose Plane it will be loaded into iClone and treated as a prop that be positioned and resized as required.

You can use the 3D Blocks that come with iClone to create your own props. Alternatively you can find most props you need in the Content Store or Marketplace. Many are free or low cost.

If you are new to character creation then you may find it easier to start with a pre-made cartoon character and then customise that to your needs. You create the character in Character Creator and then send it to iClone to animate it. Once you have animated your character in iClone you can export in Sequence Image PNG format which will include a transparent background. Alternatively you can set the background in iClone to a solid green or blue and then chromakey it in your video editing software.

You can find some pre-made toon characters HERE.

Creating toon characters and props from scratch will require some modelling experience and additional tools. You can see an example of this using ZBrush HERE. As I mentioned previously you will find it much easier if you start with pre-made assets and then customise to your needs. This way doesn't require any modelling experience. A great pack to get started is the Cartoon Character Designer pack.
