We're pretty sure based on what RL has said that the basic rendering engine will not change with 8.

If you are dead set on a different renderer, just use iClone for your work, export out and render in Blender, for example (or UE4, or Unity or whatever).  Even the Omniverse will be supported by iClone so that's another possibility.

I agree with Mr kelly on this.
Reallusion is the only company that offers a multi-tiered product line
(AFAIK).

Its primary focus is realtime Character animation with Autodesk human IK
and nonlinear motion building.

That is what you get for a base price $200 USD
 (assuming no sale specials)
Compare Iclone to its next nearest competitors.

Daz studio is Free and includes the retarded Brute force path tracer
(Iray), but  no usable Ik solver, making quality animation virtually impossible unless you either, buy Iclone/3DX pipeline or an Autodesk motion builder subscription and retarget/export custom BVH to the Daz figures.

So , as practical matter ,you wont get decent animation inside Daz studio
without at least a $500+outlay at the Reallusion software store or an on going payment to Autodesk and this does not even include a decent lip sync & facial performance option that you will have to buy such as the iphone based "face mojo" plugin for genesis 3/8 for nearly $300 USD.

And even then, as you all know by now, that the Iray  engine in daz studio is the same retarded, Brute force path tracer that we have for iclone and is only viable for STILLS and has no motion blur or support for particle systems.

However in this new era of cross application content transfer even Daz has acknowledged that there is a need to send their content out of Daz studio to superior render/animation environments and offers its own FREE export plugins to Maya ,Max C4D,Unity UE4x and ,of course, Blender.

And there is also the free ,third party Diffeomorphic Daz to Blender export plugin that is superior to the official Daz option particularly as it has an option to convert your Daz rig to a full Blender animation rig via rigify.

Poser By Renderosity?
barely worth mentioning frankly.
At around $250 USD
It has garbage native figures& content;
NO native  support for the latest Daz genesis figures
NO viable export plugins to the Major 3DCC's& game engines except a broken/outdated FBX exporter.
Primitive animation tools not effectively updated since the late
1990's
A dying online community/knowledge base with idiotic forum admins
and nearly zero tutorial presence on youtube.

So from a pure monetary perspective, Iclone (in its current state) is a still more expensive than Daz studio but from a Character animation perspective Iclone is the FAR greater value .

Now for an additional outlay of about $245 USD for CC3 pipeline
(assuming no sale specials) you will have spent $ 445 USD.

For that You get  all of the Character animation tools(Body & facial) that Daz studio lacks.
Additionally you get a decent Daz genesis Figure import/copying system
(That Poser lacks)
and Viable Dedicated export plugins to the major 3DCC's & game engines.

On the matter of render engines, we all know the limitations of the Iclone native render engine however Reallusion (like Daz) has gone to great lengths to give us viable export options to the other environments
two of them being free (Blender & Unreal).

For those who  say; they would rather keep their workflows simple
and do everything in iclone.

That is perfectly fine... stay huddled in your comfort bubble.;)
However you can not really complain to Reallusion about not having
rendering alternatives because you do have them.

Hello, animasyoncugu this is an interesting conversation iClone is capable of great renders, my two cents for what it is worth.
Everyone has a vision of what they want their renders to look like I've done a lot of projects with iClone here are some examples.
These may not be what you are after but at least it shows some of the capabilities of the native renderer, that I find pleasing others may have different examples of what they find pleasing, one of my biggest complaints in iClone that will be addressed with version 8 is anti-aliasing.

and you make up for that by doing a ray traced rendering of a set in iray or indigo,  bring that image back to iclone,  then simulate the volumetric lightings with a gradiated png.   A lot of big mmo games use these tricks too to fake lights and waterfalls and stuff like that.

in the end,  it's all fake and 2D,  how you fake it depends on the tools you use but in the end it's 2D image faking 3D lol.
CG is all a lie!!!

ever notice how people try making photo-realistic recreations of star wars space battles,  a movie made in 1977 ?  maya was created in Feb. 1998

In my opinion, if we look closer, there's nothing fancy on that image: camera DOF, fog, HDR, light bounce plus volumetric light. IClone 7 is missing volumetric light but, as @4u2ges said, RL told us in the "teaser" it will be available in IC8. Of course need work to setup it but will not be able to match the screenshot above because IClone it's too "geometric", you almost feel the mathematics in its rendering.

You're almost right :) Everything you mentioned could be done in iClone with some effort and it it would look very close, even volumetrics could probably be simulated.
All, except this... Make marked areas dark enough. You would have to pile spot shadows one over another for each designated area. And that would eventually screw something else up.
Poor balance of lights/shadows makes iClone renders look flat most of the time. Very hard to achieve depth, good contrast and vividness at the same time.
And oh, yes, GI light/bounce leaks are almost unstoppable.

I usually stay out of these discussion, but this year I have had three films that were rendered with iClone accepted at festivals.

So with care and a good story you can create an acceptable and enjoyable product using the iClone renderer.

Fun fact: a lot of animations shown at festivals are hardly photorealistic, so that's something to think about.

Shadows and AO, what gives away iClone renders most of the time.
(volumetric is coming in 8 supposedly)

I have seen a few (way too few) beautiful images created with iClone's native renderer.
Lighting, lighting, textures, and lighting seem to be key elements.

iClone 7... Character Creator... Substance Designer/Painter... Blender... Audacity...
Desktop (homebuilt) - Windows 10, Ryzen 9 3900x CPU, GTX 1080 GPU (8GB), 32GB RAM, Asus X570 Pro motherboard, 2TB SSD, terabytes of disk space, dual  monitors.
Laptop - Windows 10, MSI GS63VR STEALTH-252, 16GB RAM, GTX 1060 (6GB), 256GB SSD and 1TB HDD

hard to say - but so far there are no indicators that anything will dramatically change - features added yes, dramatically change to suddenly look like a ray traced rendering engine -  not likely -  but who knows -  if it's any indicator we've been asking for it for many years,  and we usually get new features and a pipeline to transfer files to a system with a better rendering engine, when we have gotten direct rendering engines there's always been some game breaking quirk like not being able to render particles or needing 300 gigs of drive space to take 3 weeks to render 2 minutes of footage. it's always something.  The concern about asking for new features like that is that the software is getting more sluggish with each new feature added - so while the goal for great rendering options like above is desired,  it will likely translate to extremely poor performance with a ton of bugs and the need for some outrageously priced gear to run it...heh...so be careful what you ask for lol

when you've been here long enough you learn to say "Stop,  please, no more,  can we please just fix what you already gave us!! -tears in eyes"
