Hi, how does sbsar substance materials (Substance PBR 200+) vs. iRay Materials 600+ compare regarding quality when I render with iRay plugin?

For my project, I need high quality still images and video of same scene, since iRay render plugin is so extremely slow, rendering videos in high quality is impossible, at least with my hardware... If I use iRay materials for still images, I must use sbsar equivalents for video. I guess that is not worth to create 2 scenes with iRay and sbsar, so I will only use sbsar materials for iRay still images and "classic" iClone render for video?

I admit I have not tested this, but I highly doubt that .sbsar-vs-.mdl texture sources will have any significant effect on the Iray rendering time.  Probably not even noticeable.

It really comes down to the individual texture/material.  One is not inherently better than the other.

MDL does allow for "mutli-layer" materials, such as clear coatings like varnish or shellac over a base material (varnished wood) and is great for "car paint" where there is a bit of a glitter in the paint and that extra lustrous shine.  It probably is better at "volumetric" items like gems and stuff that .sbsar, but I'm not sure how universally true that statement might be.

But .sbsar makes phenomenal substances, too.  And crappy ones.  I've made a few that I'm quite pleased with, and I've made many that are quite amateurish.  It's not the tool, it's the artist that matters most.  Check out the Allegorithmic site and I think you'll be quite impressed.
