Different strokes for different folks but everything ive seem from Kinect is enough to make me abandon the idea of using it. Everyone’s workflow is different but I think you’d get better results using stock motion and tweaking via breaking clips and key framing rather than take poor mocap with Kinect. It’s not a very popular plug so I doubt you’ll see much traction behind it and porting it over.

Not trying to be a downer, just giving a little more reality to the situation. The chance of it getting better with MLive is extremely small (not a huge suite base, hardware discontinued). So there isn’t much reason for Reallusion to pump effort into improving anything. Porting it to MLive would be a nice gesture to their prexisting customers.

I used the older Kintect plug and quickly realized honing your skills keyframing and now the curve editor would be a huge asset to making better animations. Especially if time isn’t a factor. There are plenty of high quality mocap libraries out there. Usually you can take bits and pieces to make close to what you want and tweak from there with keyframing. May end up being less work in the long run and you’ll learn essential skills in animation. That’s just my opinion though. Best of luck with the route you go for sure. Just tell your story, we all want to see it!

Tony - that sounds like it could be a practical solution.
Motion Live $100 vs Kinect Plugin $59 (member prices), but with the Motion Live it's more open ended regarding possibilities .....
And the question is when it 'arrives' (since it's coming soon), will there be an additional cost?

@Sonic Steve
The Motion Live version vs a regular plugin, I'm thinking that if you were to buy one, you would get the Motion Live, because it then opens up the possibility of using it simultaneous with another piece of mocap gear.
But, probably will operate the same.  I think the PN and Faceware are identical to their respective standalone plugin versions.  With Motion Live, you can always do one at a time, and then blend them all together, as if they were standalone plugins, just it gives you the option of simultaneous capture.  I mean, it's trailblazing really of them to do this, even if it has issues.
And, maybe Kinect's will have some improvements?...who knows!  (NOTE - RL didn't say that it would)

Yeah Mike - I understand what your saying :)
Since I've already purchased the V2 a couple of months back, I simply have to do the best I can with it.
I can't afford better gear, so making the V2 work is my only option.
iClone's Mocap software delivers low frame rates on my laptop, so if the 'specs' on this new Motion Live call for 'dual core', I'd be hopeful about staying with an iClone solution on this .....
But given that you're of the opinion that the same or very similar code is likely to be re-vamped, then common sense would tell me the 'new' software will require 4 cores slso ..... :(  (but I hope I'm wrong about that).

I wasn't trying to hijack the thread, just reply to you (and since the question was answered I didn't think it was taking the thread too far OT anymore anyway).

What RL decides to do isn't based on the most logical of things, Steve.  You *must* realize that by now <g>.  Just a mention of the world Indigo should put to rest any idea on your part that they are always providing the best or even feasible path for us.  They are a business, and as such they are in the business of making money.  If they think folks will pay for a Kinect plugin, no matter how bad it is, they will make and sell it (which they did -- they still sell it).  They most likely are going to leverage that existing code -- as a programmer I doubt it would take them more than a few days to include such a port to LIVE.  But that doesn't mean (nor should you conclude) that will make it any better.

It's the limitation of the hardware, and I was just trying to save you some heartache (and money).  But you can do what you want (trust me, it's a curse to be right all the time.  If I had to do it over I'd MUCH rather be wrong about things, many things).

Mike - the opening post poses the question: Are there any plans for a Kinect Motion Live Profile?
That was answered with a "Yes"
So surely Reallusion are saying that 'the Kinect V2 is a usable piece of hardware'.
If it was easier/quicker/better to do it totally manually, - why would they even include the Kinect V2 option?
(they simply 'wouldn't' imo, but *possibly* the V2's 'usability' with Motion Live depends on multiple sensors rather only one - but I don't know if that's the case or not).....
Like a lot of people, I'm a 'possibilities' thinker (or *try* to be).
Because of hardware limitations - I have to 'compare' different approaches and figure the best way forward.
So in this case - it's a matter of 'which one' iClone Mocap or Motion Live or xxx or yyy etc, rather than thinking "don't even go there to start with".
Even with my 6 frames per second (using the iClone Mocap software), I *could* grab a few usable 'still frames' and 'morph' the motion between them using key frames. Even that would be quicker than 'nothing at all', surely. :)
And I do really rely on (and value)  'advice' from others on this forum to find a way through this labyrinth/minefield/maze of 3D creation. (Same for us all).
Or it's perhaps like a 'quest' that we're going on - a journey thwart with pitfalls and dead ends, The 'challenge' is to get through.
If anyone reading this thread hasn't seen the original 1984 film version of "The Never Ending Story" - do yourself a favor and watch it. It will either 'resonate' with you - or it'll possibly 'bore' you.... A kid's story - yes, very 'basic' sets & costumes - yes.
But look past all that to the story itself and see whether you can 'relate' to it .... And look out for that giant tortoise ..... (remember, it's the 1984 version I'm talking about here, not the later one)....  :)

I'm not talking "pro" results -- I'm talking "usable" results.  I do not think one Kinect can produce usable results without a LOT of work afterwards (in which case you might as well construct the animation yourself -- you won't be saving any time, that's for sure).

As I said, I've bought multiple softwares that all have this issue, even with much faster machines than yours.  I just think you would do yourself a big favor and not go down that road.

Yes, - not expecting too much Mike ....
I won't be doing 'multi-sensors' and I'm not expecting pro-results.
I reallize there'll be 'cleanup' regardless, but what I'm after is a 'reasonable' frame rate at capture.
IClone's Mocap plugin only gives me 6 fps capture, but that's understandable - (my laptop's 2 cores, not 4).
The iClone Mocap software is on the 'heavy' side for system requirements. with other *brands* requiring only dual core, hence why I'm seeking alternatives.
So I'm wondering whether the 'Motion Live' software would be the *fit* ....
Is there any mention of the 'system requirements' for Motion Live ?
Steve ...

I wouldn't get overly excited about using the Kinect for any mocap.

I'm using the best software there is for it (iPisoft) -- you get what you pay for, and it's expensive.  But that's with two Kinects (more is even better) and it requires a PC for each, networked together.  It's not a simple solution.  A single Kinect just can't work very well, and I've tried and bought software from them all (I think I have three different Kinect mocap software solutions I paid for).  I think you'd be far better off (assuming you're trying to do this on the cheap) with just using the Leap and settling for forearm/hand motion only, and add the rest in by yourself.  You will never get feet right, not with one Kinect, I can promise you, and even arms can be problematic.

So you either need to scale back your expectations (WAY back) or go a different route entirely (I think the VIVE is the way to go, but I'll know more next week).

So will the 'Motion Live' software act as an 'alternative to' the iClone Mocap Plugin?
I'm yet to purchase the Mocap Plugin, and since my 'tests' with the 'trial' weren't overwhelmingly successful, I'm considering alternatives.
I imagine I'll still need something like IKinema's WebAnimate for cleaning up?
But for the capture software - will Motion Live be the go for the Kinect V2?
thnx ..... :)
Steve.
