Yin Wong (6/19/2016) Long time I use game maker program call FPSC. Then they change name to Game-Guru and I always buy it direct on TGC website. Now they stop sell it on TGC website, is only on Steam, so I not buy it any more. Time invest waste because they use Stream. Be very careful, please read EULA on Steam website.
There's always a risk. Look at how many software autodesk has killed or changed the eula. Even adobe has its share of risks.

One thing I like about steam appz is they're basically a floating license. Install on as many computers but only one session can be active. Lightwave, 3dcoat, modo are like that, too. Super convenient. I wish Iclone was like that..

I use them grudgingly... I recently got Grand Designer, which I enjoy, but which is only available via Steam, unfortunately.

they do have some great deals from time to time- I have quirky little softwares that I got for like .99 cents - so don't totally shut yourself out, Just be careful not to get too much software that you depend on to pay bills with. I got the modo when they offered it for a super low price not available anywhere else, modo indie is only on steam ....and costs almost $1,000.00 cheaper than the full version - balance

ya but be careful, steam can be a bit extreme in their EULA - and while it's not likely to happen, they have the power to shut you down from your software, for reasons you may not agree with. so on one hand, i like it because of it's portability and prices - on the other hand I don't like giving any one company the power to be a tyrant and shut my business down because they can. So i'll buy on steam when the deals are ridiculously low, otherwise, i try to get the program at sellers site. Our Beloved Gabe has been known to have troll features in his dna :p

Steam is really just a distribution channel. There are actually a good number of 3d programs sold on it. Almost all are Windows only. Here is a list of 3D and related apps available. http://store.steampowered.com/tag/en/Animation%20%26%20Modeling/#p=0&tab=NewReleases

modo indie is limited, but in a way that's almost irrelevant to iclone - the 100k poly export is the biggest limitation - but for real time, you want to stay under 100k poly anyways - also their scripts and plug ins are limited - but for the most part, most of those scripts are novelties more than necessities - I just recently discovered that modo 10 indie has realflow particles :w00t: so I'm looking forward to learning it to have the upcoming alembic format interact with it! Hopefully MD will take the same approach, limiting features that would only be appealing to hollywood standard / hard core type fashion industry type users ... Sony movie studio is the same way- it has all the toyz you need to make great videos that vegas does, but vegas adds features that are appealing to tv / hollywood standards.
