Is there any way to get rid of the "mid-tone" in the toon shader?  The example above (ignore the b.g.) is a character that does not receive shadows.  All the character shadows are toon-shader generated. Unfortunately I cannot get rid of they annoying (and completely useless) grey mid-tone that surrounds the real shadow -- it won't dial down, and I can't switch it off.  Any suggestions?

Also, this character is high poly and auto-smoothed, yet the shadows are bumpy and angular.  Any way to improve this?  Using real shadows doesn't work because it conflicts with the toon shadow. :-(

Thanks in advance!

To get rid of the mid-tones try sliding your Toon Shader Gradients closer or towards one side of the slider, or making them similar in shade... there are two under the Visual Tab.
Increase your Shadow pixels to 4096x4096 and adjust your quality as needed. Change your light angle.

Thanks for the reply!

Unfortunately I did all that stuff before I rendered the image.  High-quality shadows, 4K maps, Paint sliders both to the left.

I set the characters to cast-shadow-only, because the 3D shadows are inconsistent with the Toon look I want.  I just wish I could smooth out the toon-shadows and lose that mid-tone.

You're image looks great. BTW.

Thanks from me too, Cricky...
I can do it in iC5, no problem, but I must be overlooking something very basic in iC6...
I can't even find the modify panel for Toonshader.

Can you please point it out to me?
I've tried hovering over all of the icons to find out what they do, but they don't have any pop-up descriptions... at least not on my pc.
I've mentioned it to the team at reallusion several times, but their suggestion to try reinstalling hasn't made any difference.

Did you select "Visual" . In this panel you have : Atmosphere, Shadow map, toon shader.

AHHHH!!! Found it... Thank you. It used to be in the same set as the "atmospheres" so I was still scratching my head when I couldn't find it in the same list as HDR, Fog, Ambient Occlusion etc.

Mystery solved. Yay!!!
