ya but for 1 uv - i was breaking up my uv to allow space to change textures on things like pants and boots. So several layers went in to messiah, but only 1 came out after I rigged it.

Oh..BTW... I WAS able to also load the Toto dog into messiah and everything showed up, though it was all strange looking and almost??.. made no sense LOL
But it looked the same way in ALL the apps so far that let it actually load in with all those leg, head, body parts.

Anyway, I started last night to see how they allow you to change meshes, and now that I starrted to look into some things, i.e. Max and that Developer tools, I did find out that you CAN in fact relatively easily stitch objects so that they match another object and thus can use the same bones, vertex count matching or not... :)
Or, I hope that is what I skimmed trough Hahaha

Well, it gave me hopes, IOWs, that things Mayyy end up not as bad as I first was expecting, so, we'll see?

........md :)

Thanx first for the comments on my site.
Anyway, yeah, this site does look like something I am thinking I am going to do.
Need to read more of the information about your rights and yadda yadda NDA or anything else that I started to thnk I was getting into? LOL

Right now, I want to look into that plugin you mention and see what I see?

BTW, I enjoy this kind of thing Hehehe
Maybe cuz when you finally come up with some nice solution, you feel that much better? :)

mdunakin, let me just add my welcome! :D

We have quite a variety of mostly friendly members here, with different interests and skills, and discussions can sometimes get quite lively! :w00t:

I just concentrate on filmmaking in iClone as that is hard enough, but I often pick something up from technical discussions.

very nice work!! :w00t:

and yeah, seems like you will figure this out quickly - the biggest issue is the rules iclone sets for it's own assets for all the features to work smoothly. You could search the developers white pages for more details. You may also have an advantage with max 2011 - I think the plug in works with it. http://developer.reallusion.com/develop.aspx

Cheers :)

A small sample of some of the things I modeled.
All or most other then the Acorn character, I just did for fun, as pretty much all actual jobs, as you know, I have to be under NDAs and never get to really show all the cool medicle works I did, which included lots of really neat animtion, just, no bones, all morphs, splines and other tricks.

http://www.md-arts.com/galleries/lw_renders/galleries.html

And all the animals in the images there, I rigged on my own, just enough to pose though :( LOL

http://www.md-arts.com/galleries/vue_renders/galleries.html

Came up with several of these special effects, some of which ended up in the LW tutorials site.

http://www.md-arts.com/galleries/animations/galleries.html

And the little Acorn dude, nope!, not a bone in him.
And the Kangaroos in the gallery section, I made using a really old plugin version of messiah a trillion years ago when I use to help Lyle and a couple other programmers I knew back then.

OK, hope you enjoy my tuts and gallery stuff?
I am giving away everything you see in the Vue Gallery, like the trestles, and other things.
All of my LW files and all of my tutorials as well.
So, if you need or want anything, feel free to ask, and I mean this for anyone else out here in the forum too ;)

Thanx again for the thoughts an such..............md

I've been doing 3D professionally for..well since `87
WOW! Really?
• Yet you've never (Repurposed a single Rig)?:w00t:
• Nor Retargeted Animaion.:w00t:

What did you do in 3D... PROFESSIONALLY... since '87? :ermm:
• Model?

Yeah, sorry, guess I should have posted a few newbie to the forum self specs/facts, so I wouldn't come off like some stupid idgitt pretending to know 3D like so many people have done over the decades.
I DO have out tehre several tuts and I think nearly all of them, other then the Vue tuts, have something to do with animation, BUT!, almost every single animation trick I have posted over the years, they are all or mostly all my own tricks that other people later took as their own, which was fine with me, as I am giving away everythign on my site right now anyway and will post all the rest of the off line tutorials I never posted, as they were for showing other personal artist I knew of when or if they would get stuck on something and didn't have the time to learn yadda yadda.

I had a normal job back in the late `80s early `90s.
Rear ended by a moron fone truck.
For several years, I was able to work pro until I couldn't keep up anymore, but!, I still have been used since then, around early 2000s, animators who would come across my FREE online tutorials, some on my site, lots I've given away over the years and can't even remember where a lot of them are. I did the IvyGen tutorial.
Anyway, some of the artist who may have been on a tight schedual would ask if I could help them with the more techincal things, and that really is where I ended up, as it fits my now worsened dissabilly.
That was why it erked me that I didn't find a solution so quickly Hahaha
Kinda thought I was at least a bit better then that, right Hehe

Does that help?

I'm getting in music more now too, but am now wanting to advance my modeling skills over to the bone rigging area of things.

mdunakin (6/25/2014)
Anyway, I still can't seem to figure out ANY "normal or BASIC/SIMPLE way" to take a perfectly good bone rig, one that already has some basic motions such as (duh) walk and a few others, and put them in an object that is very close to the same type of object that I want the bones from, i.e. quad legged to another quad legged character.
Ever heardof Re-Targeting Animation?
• Simply apply motion from OneSkeleton to another.
• No Skining
• Retarget the animation from one character to another.

Yeah, sadly, I really never, until like I say, more recently, ever could totally understand a lot of that stuff, and I think a lot of them things were, some people use other words I grew up on programs never hearing, so, one person's Bevel, is another person's Loft LOL
But yeah, I can do all that changing of the bones, IN LW ONLY and ok, they start to sort of work, but never ever right and more then that, so what for me since I never to this date have been ever able to figure out, how do other people always manage to use all those moption preset formats out there, if first, you can't even SEE the actual bone rig in the first place and two, that means I can't set up MY bones to with with all them BVH format prests, which we all have, or I do, trillions of Hehe
Hey, I'm trying :D

mdunakin (6/25/2014)
But seriously, except for the Max program, I only have a pretty old version and haven't upgraded since my animation times have changed a lot over the years. No point.

No Point? OLD Max 8 would do everything you asked![/quote]
No I meant, since I never used it, as my other animators I always work with all mostly use LW.
No point in spending more zillions on more 3D programs unless I can get money back from it.
And now, obviously after reading your great info bellow, I now have an even more enthused drive to get things working, so gras.

• Use your OLD version of Max to "Rig, Skin and Model"

Oh!, wow!, For reals!???
OK, like I mentioned, I was able to load it all in there, it's currently there right now in fact, as I slowly tried to go through any tools and other things that might let me have a slightly bit more of a clue about what to do and and so on?
But, now that it sounds like you are for sure confirming this all can be done right in that app, then I will get on uTube and see IF I can find any tuts on this "exact" subject?

• ANIMATE IN ICLONE!

mdunakin (6/25/2014)
So, what you mentioned about the Skinning/Mesh stuff, yeah, I already knew about that part, and to be honest DID NOT like that whole sceme of things and actually felt like that is almost a slap to anyone that wants to do 3D, meaning, sheesh, I am forced into using the same vertex count!!!!!????

Please Re-Read it again.

YOU ARE NOT FORCED TO USE THE SAME VERTEX COUNT. A Clone mesh uses the same vertex count and order.
You are NOT using Cloned meshes, so why would you think you're FORCED to use the same ANYTHING?

Umm, I thought that was what they said, either it was in a written thing, or maybe I thought I seen it in a vid tut?
Hey, I'm human, I could of easily missed it some how LOL
Been at this a lot recently, and I can only sit here for a while at a time.
I'm still good, just the ole body is not keeping up Hehe

............md :)

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
honestly, that will have to be a trial and error and a personal choice as to how you want to do your workflow.
>>>>>>>>

Yeah, I've been finding that out Hahaha
And I mean, I knew that already, it's been that way since 3D day one, and I can remember the first Max at the convention I was also working at, as I was demoing Lightwave 1.1 or which ever it was back then, it was the first stand alone LW.
I got enugh of these apps though, several bought, and them others, free :)
I actually like blender hehehe
Same with the old Hash 3D, that was a great little program.
Not sure if that still exist?
Anyway............

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
one simple solution would be to recreate the bones in another software like blender, then just import new meshes to it.
>>>>>>>>>>>

Good, this is what I've pretty much came to the exact same solution, so thanx for helping to push e more in that direction, as sometimes that is all I need, is just an agreement on a method from other people, to just get me up and moving faster in those directions.
Gras :)

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
One solution I had considered in the past was rebuilding /recreating the iclone bone system in messiah, - copying the bone count / placement and naming convention - in hopes that iclone will adopt it back into it's ik system. The problem with messiah is that their fbx doesn't function properly and damages multiple UV models, making this solution moot.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Actually, my animation patner in the Netherlands, and myself bought the great program, messiah, so we both would have the most current versions and all, and then we both kinda had other things come u and the both of us and kinda let that program go by the wayside.
I am already as of the past couple days have decided to see just what, if anything decent, I mean, I can get out of messiah?
Wish me luck?
OPh, and I have several awesome renaming apps, some built right into the 3D programs themselves, but tiny freebie apps too hehe

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I'm planning on getting carrara because it can also do this, and is straight forward, it has a great community of artists and a nice collection of tutorials.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I had and still do, no one ever wants it no matter how many people I ask if they want free software Hahaha, but, I have that Hexigon 2 program.

>>>>>>>>>
Shade can also do this, as well as import iclone bones directly - i haven't the patience to sit down for months experimenting due to their lack of tutorials and help files. Too bad too, shade does some beautiful renders.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Wow, I actually never thought that program was weven still alive!??? Hahaha
No offense to anyone that may still use that and love it or something I mean no harm :)
Just, I still have the brand nw thing in it's case and serial number and all that, but, I have far more serious 3D apps that are proffessional apps.
So, I never bothered with it.

OK, news update thus far:
I can import the Toto dog with what could be bones and things, into Blener, just fine, and my older Max, v9 or ,11, I can't recall.
Anyway, was quite happy to see at least that happen, as that means there ARE things giving me some clues.

Right now I am going to workwith messiah and also my LW 11.6.3 and I have a few conversion apps.
Real small, but, if they can do the job, cool.

And lastly, yeah!!!, I really like your thoughts on doing that whole little method/s of "attempting to" Haha hehe see IF it can really be done like you mention about the whole naming convention, which, in theory, I'd say, most...??? might or should be pretty easy to rename and so on and also the rotations and pivot starting axis and localised to world and so on if needed rename all the joint XYZ positions and likie taht, if needed and that might need t happen?
I will let you know what I find.

Again, thanx, you really are thinking in the same levels that I like to search through for solutions... what I mean, you give great, info that shows you've been there, done that and so on, which for me and everyong else folling this thread, we are all getting something from this.
And what yoiu say so far, all makes good sense and I know some of the apps you say you never really had the time to learn, so maybe that will help me??? Hahaha

K, thanx................md :)
