ASSUMING THIS IS NEW NEWS AND NOT OLD...

iClone is a serious Program. It demands a serious OS (Operating System) and an efficiently productive GUI. (General User Interface.)

For some reason Microsoft released Windows 8 which, if you like icons (Now called TILES) the size of Toilet Seats and dont mind using an entire Buttock to squash_press_Swipe them, like being semi-locked into a borderless buttonless environment that wants to sell you pointless news about celebrities no ones celebrating, Apps that arent apps apps apps at all but are programs with unique output applied to nothing, Jewels that pop in from the side and get in the way every time you try to do something else, corner popins that annoy, buttonless borderless windows with no apparent efficient means of control, then this post isn't for you as you're undoubtedly a techno-masochist of non-productability.

BUT...; for those of you who worry about the OUTPUT of your computer rather than its BRANDNAME (GASP! A derogatory implicative against MACINTOSH maybe???? :alien:) the following is exciting and beneficial and productive and worthwhile and....

ENTER
CLASSICSHELL

DOWNLOAD IT HERE OR SEE THE SITE...

or here if your browser demands that links are http:/www. prefixed...
DOWNLOAD IT HERE OR SEE THE SITE...

By using ClassicShell you get a Windows Vista, XP or Millenium OR WIndows 7 start button again and can squash out WIndows 8 lockins and riddiculous touchscreen interfaces that were otherwise designed for 6 inch hand held telephone NOT three foot designers flat screens.
(Not my screengrab, Who uses firefox in a serious developers environment... not me.)

I hope this helps newcomers to WINDOWS 8. Having upgraded here I cannot explain the frustrations involved in Windows 8 from the startout.
FAST... but you need to get to the desktop and more easily flick from one program to the other especially working with iClone, Paintshop, Audacity, Voxpro, Etherios, Worldbuilder etc...

Amongst that there is no room for buying gerbil insurance even if they DO offer three sacks of used socks from the middle east as a loyalty bonus with nine free "apps" which are otherwise standalone programs.

Has the whole world gone pig-thick titsup intellectually or am I the only person left who wants to continue his business world in computing the way its always been for over a Quarter of a Century now.
Just because mac users eternally sulk from behind square wheels doesnt mean the rest of the world wants as bumpy a ride from behind round ones. Making Windows 8 appear as if it's evolved from within a telephone nightmare doesn't mean its a dream tool for anybody who lives outside email"S", flashing spam banners, pointless shopping and eternal "apps-apps" purchasing.

Some of us have lives.
Enjoy ClassicShell.

[Right, thats it, rant over. Its a long post but I use small words.]

Armstrong.

haha - great post Armstrong. Have you found most of your software compatible with Windows 8? In particular, iClone, Adobe products etc. the stuff most of us on the forum might use. What about drivers?

HI Pollux, 3DStory and Colour...

About ClassicShell.
Pollux, re: ClassicShell, it adds a start button leagues more efficiently than its origins that is totally missing in WIndows 7 and 8.
Everytime someone wrote a bypass to the lockin screens in 7 and 8 Microsoft blocked it in the next release.
God alone knows why Microsoft excluded it from Windows H8.
The world over is fuming about the nonsense and idiot abolishment of basic controllers in Windows 8. Its a telephone software thing now.

Regarding Software in Windows 8 AND iCLONE TEST:
iClone starts up in about 3.4 seconds.  Runs like lightning.
Test example=
Old Machine Windows XP - 5 G5's rendered at 26 seconds per frame.
Current Machine Windows 8 - 20 G5's Rendered at (Hold your breath) 15 frames per second. I can render realtime in iClone v5.x.

EXCITING SET CAPABILITY.
I've built an entire 30 building Village, Market square, forest and populated it with a dozen strategically placed G5's and it's only now starting to feel the strain.
Better Solution =Quartering this into four quartered sets I can work even more intricately and have ever  more on set in each quarter and shoot each angle safely by running four quarter sets instead of manipulating one giant one.

PaintShop Pro vX5, vX4, v11 and v8 start in about 7.5, 7, 4.2, and 3.5 seconds.  Run Perfectly.
Turbine Video Encoder in about 4.3 seconds. Runs Stunningly FASSSSST!
Good old Voice morph VoxMorph Pro starts, as per usual, in about 15 seconds. Runs Perfectly.
EarthSculptor starts in under 2 seconds. Runs Perfectly.
Terragen Starts Under 1 second. Runs Stunningly. (Terragen 2+ Rocks.)
Apophysis Starts 2.5 seconds. Runs Perfectly.
Office 2000 runs faster than I can click the mouse its already on the screen. I need only MSPublisher really.
Swishmax starts in under 3.4 seconds. Runs beautifully.
Audacity starts in a blink and runs perfectly.
My Gerbils start at about midday and run like the clappers all about their cage. :w00t::cool:

But...
ACE FTP glitches with text misformatting in WIndows 8.
Cooledit doesn't run at all.
But on the other hand
BULLETPROOF FTP runs like lightning and I can save files faster to the server with it than to the hard drive.

So far iClone 64 runs deliciously on Windows 8 but for now I need to use the old crumbling machine for facial emphasis on Monster Speech. So, close ups needed there but then, if they weren't close ups why bother with facial expressions you cant see. I'll have to plot that properly next week.

How is everybody else getting on with Windows 8?

Won't be Installing it untill W7 becomes unsupported.  Which is a long way off.

IMO, Re; Render to File times are, for the most part dependent upon your Hardware. I would be surprised if W8 produced significantly faster Render times than Vista/W7 with the same Hardwarware. It also depends upon which File Format you are Rendering to & what you have in the Timeline.

IMO, the only Realtime Render is for Playback & not to File.

I'm still using Vista only because I'm too lazy to re-install all my programs, updates, re-save all the files & directories....

I have used Windows 7 on other computers and I like it. Windows 8 looks like some teenage girls mobile phone. I've got zero interest in it. What is it with this world being so obsessed with tiny mobile phone screens and touchscreen tablets which never seem to understand what your finger is trying to select. Call me old fashioned and maybe stupid, but give me a mouse and a keyboard any day over some stupid gimmicky touch screen that is designed for girls fingers.

I had assumed Windows 8 would have had the option to go back to a 'classic view', but judging by this thread, it doesn't. I'm looking at upgrading my desktop soon, better go and see if I can find Windows 7 before it disappears.

Hi there.

iClone & Windows 8.
Regarding upgrading to Windows 8 with iClone... It's superb but only with with ClassicShell.
ClassicShell squashes out the patronising "Lock in" "Tile Screen" and to date has worked silently.

The Saving Starter.
iClone in Windows 8 IS a nightmare of Mobile-Phone Gizmo annoyances and rewritten rules to work by UNLESS you install ClassicShell.
The guy that invented and wrote it in open source is a genius. It really does save the day.

Lets make iClone Crash?
It hasn't crashed on me once yet, ClassicShell, iCLone v5.x  OR Windows 8.
Fast as lightning compared to my old Vista and XP devices. iClone hasn't bluescreened and  Ive packed it full to exploding point to force it into a death mode but...... No. Stable as a rock on this.

Once you're back to the desktop in Windos8 everything is productive.
Kill off the Mobile Phone Stallers and work commences.
So don't stand back because of 8.

Until ClassicShell I was an 'x'th degree off re-installing XP on this device.
Get back in control and we can produce again.
I'm so reinspired with this OS You wouldn't recognise the above sets latest stage now if you saw it. You can add in so much incidental stuff in iClone with a little kick in your Horsepower... But I'll save that for the final output.

Ok I do understand better now, the solution for Windows 8 and Desktop is ClassicShell.  I still think that I'll stay with W 7 for a little longer.  Thanks Armstrong for your input.

I'm not really sure why you would want to bother with Classicshell. Just switch to Desktop mode and you have everything you had in Windows 7 (minus the old start button).

And if you want the old Start button and the look of Windows 7 why not carry on using Windows 7.

In my opinion Windows 8 is a fantastic new operating system and after spending a little time getting used to the new layout I wouldn't go back to Windows 7 again.

Just being able to turn the power on and have the OS loaded in a few seconds is worth the price of the upgrade on its own in my opinion. ;)
