can you fade in/fade out between switching cameras ? And/Or create a gradual transition between cameras?

Sometimes I find it's a bit abrupt switching between cameras, or I'd like to fade out and back in again to create an illusion of time between scenes

I know I could do it the hard way, add a scene with no light onto the timeline and allow the transition to create a similar effect, but surely there's an easier way to fade in/fade out ?

Don't know the answer, without trawling through the "Useless" User Manual, Darren.

However, I guess that those who Edit iClone Post Production in their NLE Program, would add Transtions at that time.

I seldom use Transitions & don't use iClone's Camera Switch anyway. I prefer (At the moment) to treat each Camera angle as a separate Project. Exporting that to a Video File & Stitching the Video Files together, for Final Editing & Render to a Final Video File in my NLE Program. It depends upon an individual's particular Workflow.

Anyone-else?

There is no doubt that you must use some video editing program.
I mean, come on, we make movies. Movies likes to be be edited. I know that for sure, they told me so.
iClone is not video editing program. Video editing programs are. Simple as that.
And some of them are free.

I use the camera switcher often, but I am not aware of any fade-in or fade-out effect. Whenever I need that effect I do it in post.

Forms and entire scenes that looks similar works well - maybe zooming into a wall or something else and out from another. I mean you could zoom in so close that it shows only a color or blur things on purpose - then shift to a camera that also blurs or is close.

It's also possible to create a new camera from the last point of another cam and by duplicating (typing it in) exact data of a third cam position it's not impossible to hit the same view as the one you transition to. And the result is an extra transition camera.

I think it's worth playing with even if video editing is the usual place to work this out.

thanks for the link, but wow that's a complicated procedure.
I just wondered if there was a simple feature. Would be a handy addition, I realise iClone isn't intended as an editor, but if you can switch between cameras on the go, surely a simple fade in fade out or dissolve transition option wouldn't be difficult to implement.

I have a good video editing program (Pinnacle Studio 12), but I like to switch cameras fairly regularly (sometimes 3 or more camera switches within a 60 seconds. So if I were to treat every camera switch as a separate scene I'd have heaps of scenes to put into the editor. I do break my scenes up into chapters for editing later, but I like to view a chapter in iClone so I can get some sort of concept of the continuity before going to the editor.

Here's a suggestion: In iClone create your scene with the camera switches leaving 1 sec (30 frames) before and after the camera switches. Render you scene. In your editing program, clip the scene at the end of a camera switch and add the fade out/fade in.

A bit long winded but not so complicated. Just take a plane/billboard/shape, place it in front of the camera, apply a color to it (white or black) and then key frame the opacity before and after the camera switch to achieve the fade in/out. This effect can be used in many different ways. If you watch the movie I link in my signature (Urban Explorers Guide...) I used it at the 1:40 mark to fade in the background of a scene while leaving the foreground narrator.

Still, I agree with the consensus that most transitions are better left to the editing software. Fades and scene transitions are often synonymous with time lapses or scene changes which are often a good place to separate your scenes. At least in my experience.

Download Link if you want one prepared showing Chuck and The Image Layer...No Scenery included, so it should download quickly. Just save the already named Image layer and re-use it as needed.

The easiest way to fade in and out for camera changes or just to create a transition, is using an Image Layer. It goes wherever the camera goes, and always stays in front of the scene without interference.

Make the Diffuse Color Black, The Opacity White. Raise and Lower the OVERALL Opacity in the modify panel to change the Fade in or out, not the Diffuse and Opacity channels individually. If you want it to stay at a specific setting, copy the key on the timeline and paste it to hold that stage of Fade, whether in or out. Play with it enough and you'll get the idea.

The Opacity changes are on the timeline under the Material Tab.

Very Simple to do.
