Thanks for your comments about the contest rule, especially about the "popularity" issue.
Of course, there are different ways that we can collect the "number" to determine the popularity.
The 1st thing might be related to the social media itself. YouTube, Facebook, and forum all can be the possible sources. We finally decide to use YouTube since it's more opened to the general public. We think it should be a good idea to include more people's feedback except Reallusion forum.

I think the other issue is why we just use "View". Basically, "Like" is undoubtedly another good index. But among these contestant videos, "View" seems to be more differentiable for the grading. So we finally decide to use "View" as our final criterium. To avoid the winning video is too "View-oriented", we also include judge's comments to balance it for the major awards. And if the video gets higher Views due to the immoral, violent content, they won't pass.

We hope it can help explain the contest rule better for you. :)

By the way, we did host an iClone contest using forum voting system. In our previous experience, one of the candidates try to register many different accounts to get better votes. It's also kind of difficult for our management during that period of time.

Peter (colour), I have no problem with a peer vote, as long as it doesn't determine the main prize winners. Morever, the Pinhead voting is within a confined community, so that is alright and I do value the outcome, because I believe people actually watched the movies.

A couple of recent RL contests went through Facebook and people just tell their 2000 friends "vote for me!" There is no way to take that seriously, and I will not participate in contests run like that... Hmm, this statement is sure to make me immensely popular...:ermm:

Hmmmm....................When I posted the original question, I was thinking along the lines of the Pinhead Projects voting system & that is:

1) A Public Pinhead HQ Website on line vote for the variuos categories, to win a coveted Golden Pinhead Award, open to all.

2) A private vote for winning prizes in the various categories, judged by a Panel consisting of the Pinhead Projects Committee & selected Experienced & well-known Editors.

As far as this &  other Reallusion contests go, I personally would like to be given the opportunity to vote. A vote from your peers means a lot.

2 Reallusion contests I've found particularly entaining were/are;The Google Sketchup & Animation Salad. I feel cheated because there's no way I can show my appreciation, apart from Posting comments.

Maybe I'm wrong (it wouldn't be the first time) but I thought the main reason for the contest was to showcase CTA, to have a place to show the capabilities of the software. Of coarse someone that has years of schooling in the field, and gets put on T.V. will have an advantage in the contest, but come on, winning most viewed isn't going to put you into the top 1%, the prize is an xbox for pete sake. Well now that I'm done with that rant, I think the most viewed on the forum should win something.:P

I read the rules (very closely) and agreed to them before I submitted any entree. This contest has a jury (albiet a largely unknown one) that decides the majority of the vote for every category but the "most popular" one. I'm just saying that given a choice in future contests I would prefer a vote from folks that do the kinds of things I do (animate using CTA or Iclone) as opposed to a video views based scenario.

If I decided to make a movie about the bullet that killed Osama (a dancing, singing bullet no doubt) or something equally sensational then I would probably have garnered more video views. But instead of worrying about what would get tthe most views, I created the story that I wanted to tell. Also, the choice about where to upload your video becomes a part of the game. Will I get more views on Vimeo or on Youtube? Where should I embed this movie. How should I promote it (sensationally or professionally - and so we are clear, there is nothing inherently wrong with being sensational, its simply a choice we make). There are a lot of factors involved in the contest that have nothing to do with making the best animated short that you can. A community vote would cut through some of these issues but would no doubt open up others.

In summation, Im not complaining about this contest's criteria but as an RL spokesman brought the issue to light, I wanted to voice my opinion about future possibilities.

Why bother creating a piece of media if not as a medium to 'engage/entertain/encourage/enlighten' an audience? Even a piece created for a 'selected few' to view is media created for the society of 'selected'.

As for Facebook & other social media groups - when your production is finished, is it not right to go the extra mile and promote it? It's the faceless masses that matter to the media's measure, not the maker's mindset.

Lastly - the rules of the competition were there for potential entrants to consider prior to participation.
