Others have shared that they are experiencing the same issue that I am experiencing. I will be working on a project, and it will work fine with no apparent issues, no kind of lag or such. I stop and save the project. When I come back to start it up, the file starts to load normally, but just before completing, it stops and up pops the message "Failed to load file".
This has happened repeatedly, with smaller project files as well as larger ones. It is difficult to figure out a common thread. I updated my Nvidia drivers, and I thought that helped, but then the issue started cropping up again.
At one point I thought that the problem was possibly associated with using some old legacy animations, but even after I stopped using them, I continue to get the problem (though less often)
It is extremely annoying to lose this work over and over. I have tried to compensate by only doing very brief projects with just a few seconds of animation, rendering that, then saving a version of the project with all the animation removed. But it's a pain in the neck, and piles up all these extra project files.
I do think there is some issue with the way Iclone 8 saves animations that may be causing this "Failed to load file" issue. The difference in size between project files saved with animations and the same one saved without animation is often much, much greater.

Luke, I haven't heard from you, but I am assuming that the file I sent you could not help you locate the problem.
Here is something that might. I have had this "Failed to Load File" error at random times, and have started saving two safety copies on two different drives. Yesterday I had the issue and it occurred on BOTH safety copies from both different drives.
The changes between the versions of the project were very small between the previous file that had loaded successfully and the one that failed. I began to experiment.
Eventually, I discovered that when I replaced a full CC4 character with a lower-poly LOD version of the character, and saved the project, that difference alone would cause the "Failed to Load File" error. I often will switch to smaller LOD versions of a character when I have completed all close renderings of the avatar, but still need the figure to be seen in the background.
There must more involved, though. I tried this with just a single avatar in a project, switching back and forth to different versions, and had no issues. It may be that the project has to be a certain size before this error is triggered. My projects are often large with complex sets and a lot of figures. Or there may be some entirely different issue.
But at least there is some direction to look into here. I will keep experimenting.
Is no one else experiencing this problem?

More experimenting has shown that some avatars that have been created using the InstaLOD remesher in CC4 work fine and do not seem to cause the "Failed to Load File" problem.
But others, even when they are the only thing in the project, will cause the issue.
Here is a process that I have repeated with different avatars. Can others duplicate this?
1. Load an old CC1 avatar into CC4 2. Upgrade the CC1 avatar to CC3 avatar 3. Apply the CC3 traditional facial expressions (this new avatar will work fine in Iclone 8 and will not cause the "FTLF" issue) 4. From this avatar create a lower poly version using the InstaLOD remesher (I don't think specific parameters matter, but I haven't tried them all) 5. Take the LOD avatar into Iclone 8. You can animate it, it works fine, though as an LOD model there will be no facial expressions. There is no indication of a problem. 6. Save the project 7. Attempt to load the project you have just created. (I always get the "FTLF) error when I do.)
I am still experimenting. Avatars that I created earlier using CC3 so far have not exhibited this issue. More soon.

Further experiments show this apparently does not happen with the CC characters included with Iclone. It does happen with a number of my DAZ imported characters, which are mainly what I use.

That would happen to any characters which have at least one accessory (even CC4 characters like Camila). Accessories are causing various problems with export/import since CC3. Latest related ticket: https://www.reallusion.com/FeedBackTracker/Issue/Reimported-Accessories-are-invalidated-after-detaching And the issue you have described is another one in a chain. You should open another ticket or add a comment at the above.

Thanks for the info on the ticket about the accessories. It certainly seems related. I will add a comment there and also create a new ticket, now that I have some understanding of the cause for all the "Failed to Load File" errors randomly occurring in my projects.
This is such a relief to me because now I can at least test the different avatars and eliminate the ones that cause the problem. All those lost hours of work are now hopefully a thing of the past. and I no longer have to clog up my drives with so many multiple safety copies of the projects.

I am having the same problem.
I have lost a lot of work over the last 5 days due to this problem.
I am using LOD versions of characters and very similar to Cary B using Daz props, sets and characters, including poses for my sets. My project is a large scale project and I have to use LOD remeshing.
I have characters at the 'LOWEST' setting of exported iAvatars all created originally in CC3 but then I moved over to CC4 from where I did the exports as LOD files and exported them into iClone 8.
The problem has occurred on two different projects:
1. About 2.9 GB in size. 2. About 1.9 GB in size.
It is infuriating and frustrating with anxiety going through the roof every time I am saving now with the worry the file will not open again. I too am keeping backups and now the latest 2 backups will not work for the project (2). Project (1) I had to re-create it all over again character by character.
This needs an urgent fix or workaround. I have a project with a deadline of 23/08/22. And now I am very worried I will not be able to complete it due to this huge loss of work and stress trying to find out why this is happening.
Can someone please help with this?
Regards, Sam

As I mentioned above, Accessories are a problem. There is no solution for now until it fixed by RL (hopefully in the next release).
Two workarounds for now:
One.. 1. Detach all accessories from a character 2. Export character with LOD option 3. If necessary LOD props (converted from accessories) with Polygon reduction Object 4. Import character to iClone 5. Send LOD props one by one to iClone and reattach to respective character bones (probably need to keep some standard pose for accessories to match desired coordinates)
Two.. 1. Convert each accessory to cloth (Transfer Skin Weight) 2. Edit Skin Weight for each item of converted to cloth accessory, select the bone it used to be attached to and use Add paint brush to give all object vertices 100% influence 3. LOD character and import to iClone
You should not have any problems with failing to open file.

Hi, Thanks for your reply and suggestions.
Unfortunately, my characters do not have accessories. They are all mainly clothed and accessories are converted to cloth.
Please see the screenshots attached. It is a train scene with lots of people on it.
The issue I have is my scene has a crowd of characters. And I think when I added a certain type of character, the problem arises.
It las happened when I added two different characters to the platform people. So, I will check new characters before adding them for accessories. But I think the problem is not just accessories associated.
Not sure if it an LOD remeshing issue or something else?
Either way RL need to get a fix to this asap as it is a very difficult and appalling problem that has cost me days and put huge pressure on my deadline.
If I had known, I would've just used iClone 7 for this project.

Appreciate so much the step-by-step workaround, 4u2ges. This will help those of us who have had this maddening issue to know that our saved projects can actually be secure.
I have tested all my LOD characters individually by simply loading them in a project, saving it, and then trying to reopen the project. I found that older LOD characters I had created with attached accessories in CC3 actually still were usable in Iclone 8.
I also found a character with a "Viking Beard" hair element that would cause the problem. I had not realized that the "viking beard" was being read as an accessory.
I haven't tested extensively, but maybe creating the LOD characters in CC3 with attached accessories would be a quicker solution. It would have to be tested. I will try to get around to that later today.

Hi Cary B,
I'm in the same boat as you and really hacked off with this error.
Further to your reply. I wonder if this has anything to do with licenses and extended licenses of content?
I am going to test with individual characters too, to see where the problem might be...
|
By Cary B - 3 Years Ago
|
Pretty sure it's not related to licenses, Aidemlndi. The avatars themselves can be remeshed without causing the issue. As 4u2ges pointed out, it only happens when the avatar has an attached accessory and goes through the remesh process.
I had not picked up on that, since I do have some older LOD characters with attached accessories that seem okay. I will test this further in CC3.
Watch out for accessories that you might not think of as accessories, like the "Viking beard" I had issues with.
For me, simply taking the avatar by itself and creating the LOD version is probably sufficient. I can then add the original accessory in Iclone and still have a much lower-poly figure.
Good luck with making your deadline. At least you know where the problem lies now, and that is a great relief.

We must have been posting at the same time. I didn't see this post of yours before.
I see bearded characters in your screenshots. I would test those avatars out first, and see if the hair elements may be causing the same problem as the accessories.

Hi Cary B,
Thanks for the heads up on the beard. But I've noticed the bearded characters do not seem to cause any issues. They load okay.
There must be something that is related to something being classed as an accessory that maybe is not an accessory as we know it.
I am trying character by character against the mass of characters that do work. To find out which characters are problematic.

For some distant characters you may save further by using a 2D on Billboards.

BTW, the problem with Viking beard is because it categorized as an accessory. In other words it has a bone:

Did some quick testing. Took an avatar with attached accessory into CC3 and used the remesher to created a lower LOD figure. Took this remeshed avatar into Iclone 8, saved the project and then reopened it. No "Failed to Load File" issue.
Tried with a second, different avatar and accessory, same good result.
So using CC3 looks like a viable option for creating the LOD characters from DAZ imported figures and such.

Hi, Cary B Thank you for the information, it helps us a lot. Here is the procedure I used to reproduce the problem.
1. Apply any CC3 character 2. Apply any accessory 3. Export iAvatar with default LOD settings 4. Load the iAvatar to iClone 8 and save it to the iProject 5. Load the iProject then it shows "Failed to load the file"
We will try to fix it in a coming patch, thank you again for trying.

Hi Luke,
From your reply, I assume you are from the development team.
I have opened a ticket on the matter with links to my project files you can download to test.
Support TicketID : 225765
I am currently loading in characters one by one from CC4, remeshing with LOD in CC4, exporting them.
In iClone 8, I am then importing them in as iAvatars, saving and re-opening the project file and checking if it is just accessories or something else. This is very tedious and has impacted my project timescales hugely.
Therefore, a patch/fix for this issue will be hugely welcomed asap.
Thanks Sam

Hi, I'm fairly new to the software and have run into the "failed to load file" issue. I own CC4 (v. 4.4) and running trial version of Iclone8 (v.4.33). I've made 5 characters so far and the first two I made can be loaded into Iclone but the latest three cannot. All of these characters were made in CC4. The three that don't work all have RL content store clothing and nothing else. Let me know whatever information is needed to solve this issue. I don't need the first two that work. The ones that don't work are for my current project, unfortunately.

The problem is likely due to a mismatch of versions. If you are using Character Creator 4.4 then you should be using iClone 8.4 to avoid any file compatibility issues. It has always been the case that files saved in a newer version of the software can't be opened in an older version. Try opening the characters with iClone 8.4 to see if the problem is resolved.

I have the same issue with 8.4 . I've been waiting for days for a ticket response. -Some projects suddenly stop functioning and displaying "failure to load the file" error. Work comes to a dead stop, RL has been silent. How can a person not be angered by this poor customer service? I'm starting to feel horrible that I encouraged my friend to buy this product. Now I'm hoping I can stop him from wasting his money,

I had a check and unfortunately the delay in getting help from Support originally was because you posted your question under Cartoon Animator 5 not iClone 8.
However, I see you have now posted a new ticket for iClone 8 but unfortunately you keep amending the ticket with new information. As tickets are handled by Support in date order, you are effectively pushing your ticket further down the list to get a reply. I would strongly urge you don't amend the ticket any further and Support will get back to you as soon as they can. Thanks.
