Hi everyone, Been using iClone 4 for over a year now, and theres one thing I'm stuck on and would really like to know how (if it's possible in iClone).

Is there any way to switch between local and global coordinates when moving props etc. I use Blender3D too, and its just a mouse click in that program, but haven't so far found it in iClone. For example I have two bits of road (a plane with road texture). The X axis and the Y axis points towards the corners of the plane rather than the edges, so trying to line up the two road pieces requires dragging a bit on the X axis, and then a bit on the Y, it's really time-consuming... and I have a big set to build.

Hope I've made myself clear as to what I'm looking for, if not, I could make a short video to demonstrate?

Cheers,

Scott Hather

if i understand your question correctly, what you do is select the prop you want to move, then on the transforms panel look for these selections to move it in small increments. hope this helps...cheers :)

Thanks for the quick reply, but no sorry, its not what I'm looking for. Here's a piccy to show:

To align the bits of road together I'd need to drag along the green axis, and then along the red, and repeat this several times until it's properly aligned.

If I could switch to local coordinates OR rotate it somehow so that the green axis is parallel to the yellow line down the middle of the road, then it would be a lot easier. Rotating the object itself has no effect on the X/Y axis themselves.

I'll admit it's probably my fault, I made this prop and probably didn't set it up correctly in the first place, but I'm hoping theres some way to correct the mis-aligned axises.

ahh ok, i gotcha, I believe that has something to do with resetting the pivot point , not sure though, perhaps someone else can chime in.

I recently constructed a road using various different sections of iClone Content Road props.

If you're only using one type of section:

1) Enable Show Grid & Snap to Grid

2) Import your road section into the Previewscreen

3) Align to Grid

4) Select Your road section in Scene Manager whist holding-down the Ctrl Key & wait for Duplicated section to appear.

5) Select Duplicated Section

6) Hold-down the Shift Key & Move the Gizmo along the Grid. The duplicated section will slide off the top of the first section & snap to Grid exactly in line with the first section.

7) Hold-down Ctrl & select both sections, to duplicate them

8) Repeat 6).Then you'll have 4 sections exactly lined-up along the Grid.

Keep repeating the above until you've completed your road.

If your last section is too long or short, use the Gizmo Scale to adjust it's lenth. Then switch to Move, whilst holding-down the Shift key, to precisely align with the previous section.

Move/Rotate/Orbit Scene, to check  from different angles that the road sections are exactly aligned & there are no gaps.

When satisfied,  Move/Rotate/Orbit the Preview Camera to desired Camera view & ADD that as Camera 1 & lock it. Continue Editing in Preview camera, checking Camera 1 to view result of additional Edits.

@ satscape - there is no global coordinate system in iclone, at least that i know of, and these are good ways to work around your situation.

Iclone translation is base on global coordinates, so if you want to create a diagonal street is better to created the length of the street parallel to the y or x coordinates first , then group it and then rotate it at whatever angle you wish that street to be.

Hope this helps,

Stuckon3d

PS: for faster placement of road segments use the steps Colour wrote for you using the grid and the snap to grid function.

ctrl G to turn grid on or off
to change grid spacing go to preferences
To turn on snap to grid on or off is CTRL w

Thanks everyone for your replies. The snap to grid method along with duplicating multiple pieces of the road is speeding the process up a lot.

Still would be nice to move things using local coordinates OR global...maybe an iClone 5 feature? :)

Cheers
