This is probably a VERY stupid question, but in the remote possibility that the answer is actually yes, I'm willing to look like an ignoramus for asking it. Is it possible to run iclone8 from an external hard drive?

Hi... You can install iClone 8 and its content folders onto an external drive if you wish but some files and registry setup will still be required on the local computer. For this reason it works best when the external drive is permanently connected to your computer. For example, you cannot simply disconnect an external drive and connect it to a different computer, expecting to run iClone directly from the drive without installing it first.

Peter, thank you so much for clarifying that! Could you give me a rough estimate of how much space the registry setup and other files that you mention would take on the local computer? iclone 7 is already installed on it. I have a 250G windows hard drive with 81G hard drive free on it.

I downloaded and installed CC4 and ic8, then followed the instructions on the tutorial linked below to install the content on an external hard drive because I didn't have the space on my old pc. But every time I clicked to move a folder, it took even more space out of my hard drive! I watched it get depleted as I worked and finally had to uninstall. I've never disconnected the external hard drive. It has 5T of available space on it. If I try again, would I still be able to make use of the remainder of the 30 day free offer?

I'm not really understanding what you mean by " clicked to move a folder, it took even more space out of my hard drive! I watched it get depleted as I worked and finally had to uninstall". Do you mean when you moved your custom content to the external drive (say the D: drive) it depleted space from your C: drive? When you installed CC4 and iClone 8 you should have chosen the external drive for both program files and your content files. Then when they are installed you can choose to install all your content directly from Content Manager within CC4 and iClone 8. This installs everything on the external drive which should not have any real effect on the space available on the C: drive. Note: Reinstalling again should not affect the number days remaining on your trial.

Peter, I'm sorry if my reply was misleading. There was no clicking to move any folders. The clicking was later in the process, exactly as I describe below when I tried again: First, I choose the external drive for where to install everything for iclone8 and CC4. Everything. Then I tried using iclone8 and it seemed to work. A minute later I was asked to click on some pop-ups to install additional content. It gave me no choice as to where that content would be installed, but I assumed it must be in the external drive I'd chosen, but as soon as I clicked on it and the progress bars were moving, I looked my hard drive on Windows Explorer and just like the last time. I could see available space disappearing right before my eyes. It seems that additional content never got the memo that it was supposed to go to the external drive. Instead, it appears to be going to the folder where all that sort of stuff from iclone7 is installed. Will I have to uninstall iclone 7 entirely for iclone 8 to put its content files in the correct place? I'll do that if you assure me I can get 7 back if 8 doesn't work. For me, it's either buy iclone8 to run on this old pc or buy a new pc that I can animate DAZ on. I can't afford both and I'd much rather stay with iclone.

Hi... If you click on Settings in Content Manager (see screenshot below) it will display where your template and custom content is being stored. This should be the external drive. However, as mentioned previously, some files like temporary files, installers etc. are still stored on the C: drive by default. Regarding iClone 7, you can certainly uninstall this and reinstall to a different drive if you wish.

OK, but how do I re-start installation of content that was interrupted? I click on some of the greyed-out assets that I see in the Content panel, but I just get an error message that files are missing. Could I uninstall iclone 8 again and start all over for the third time, or are the bots at reallusion going to decide that I've tried too many times?

You are in "Item" view. Switch to the "Pack" view. Then you can right-click the pack thumbnail and select "Uninstall Content". Then start installing again by double-clicking the pack thumbnails in the "Free Resources" category.
