Do yall think it would be possible to make a plugin that does vray in iclone8? Maybe if we make a better renderer we won't have to wait for iclone?

Vray is  an expensive external engine
Why not just export to NVIDIA omniverse for realtime Path tracing
or UE5 via the live link plugin
They are both free after all.

It's not simple to export to a 3rd party program. I got iclone for the drag and drop animation functionality, and the ease of animation. Why would anyone want to have to use a 3rd party product after spending $300+ on the software? There are other lighting options like lumen if vray is to labor intensive.

You must understand that Vray, (like Arnold , Redshift, octane,Iray, lumion, cycles etc), is not a lighting system but a complete stand alone rendering software the requires its own native shader and lighting system system.

It must be $$licensed $$ and integrated into your software as third party render engine to which your scenes are “exported and rendered.
As a former C4D user I used Vray(for C4D) for nearly a decade
I still have it with My "old" seat of C4D R26.
Not as simple as some single person just writing a “python plugin” :D

RL has tried with two ray-trace render plugins, Indigo and Iray, and both were hardly successful. Indigo required the conversion of the complete iClone scene for each frame to a local Indigo scene format, which was highly inefficient and only made sense for still images. In addition, the makers of Indigo were nor really interested in providing support for animation. Iray was a bit better in that sense, but certain things were not supported and there were issues with texturing and trees, for example.

Like Autodidact points out, each renderer has its own shading system and the conversion into that target system is not easy. So, the wise decision has been made by RL to allow exporting to other 3D applications, with exporting to Omniverse being the easiest.

These are great replies!

V interesting - I also have occasionally wondered how easy Vray would be to integrate. But yes, I think the points above sound correct.

I love the Omniverse integration, personally. And I also think in general that the native viewport renderer in iClone and character creator has gotten so so much better over the years!
