I edit / composite my videos in Premiere Pro.
I'm assuming that for maximum quality I should render (from iClone) to image rather than to video (?).
Any opinions on TIFF vs PNG vs JPG?
Thank you.

TIFF and PNG files are "lossless" while JPG is not. TIFF's & PNG's should hold up better (keep their color fidelity) in the editing process. If you have audio in your iClone animation it will not be included in a TIFF or PNG image sequence render. I usually render out an .mp4 animation to have the audio track if needed for sync purposes in post.

I use PNG image sequences because of the lossless compression. TIFFs are also lossless but the resulting files are larger. When rendering from iClone they have no particular advantage. JPG files are lossy and should be avoided.

Besides quality, the advantage of working with image sequences is that it is easy to rerender part of a scene or even a single frame. When rendering to video you would have to rerender the whole scene. I've seen that some users want to render a 15-minute project in one go. It is better to render by scene, which would usually be a minite or less, and then use a video editor to put everything together.

Another advantage is that you can do interesting graphic post-processing with image sequences. I have been experimenting with using Photshop and After Effects to give to change the look of my iClone renders.

One possible disadvantage of image sequences is that you don't have the sound. I never use the sound from iClone. I have dialog files that are used for lip-synching and that are then combined with the image seqeunces in my video editor (I use Vegas Pro). If you want to use the audio out of iClone, you can do so by rendering to a .WAV file. This is an option under Video rendering.

EDIT: Mark was quicker...

One other question...
I'm rendering from iClone at 30 fps but on import of the sequence into Premiere, it indicates the sequence is 29.97 fps.
It appears this is the result of the "intermediate media timebase" preferences setting in Premier defaulting to 29.97.
Safe to assume this should be changed to 30 fps?

Yes, you can change it to 30 fps. Just make sure that your project rate in Premiere is also 30.

Sorry, just woke up, but no serious animator renders to anything other than images (for one important reason - you can always re-render ONLY what you need to.  Sometimes there is a crash or some other stoppage and you need to re-render parts of what didn't render.  Also - you can change part of a sequence and then you only need to re-render that particular part).

And, finally, if you edit your work at all you do NOT want to recompress twice (or more).  So - single images only (the only time I've broken this is when iClone itself is broken - motion blur didn't used to work on single images.  I think they fixed that but it's worth checking - if it still is broken and you need blur you have no choice).

Thank you for the response. Yes, I ran into the "compressing twice" problem with video many years ago. Ugly.
