Happy New Year! Here is short video clip of a cute dancer doing a Scottish dance. The character is from the Reallusion Store, as are the dress and dance motion. The character was animated in iClone 8 and then exported to Cinema 4D. Hair and cloth (top and jeans) were simulated in C4D R2024.2 and then rendered with Redshift.

The cloth looks good but the hair sim looks very unnatural and “springy” with zero dampening.

Thanks for watching. Actually, there is a little dampening for the hair but not a lot. Hair simulation is a tricky thing, because the simulation takes a long time and you cannot really get an appreciation of the "feel" or look of the hair in motion until you have rendered it out (which, in this case, took about 30 hours). Anyway, the main point was the clothing simulation, not so much the hair. I just added the hair so as not to have a bald character. Importing hair that was simmed in iClone as an Alembic file presents issues of its own which is why I did not do that.

Hm, not that bad, but I can not imagine one is willing to wait 30 hours for this result. You really should consider to switch your render application. In Unreal a similar result would render within 2 Minutes... (this surely depends on your hardware though)

Well, I'm willing to wait... Using iClone (plus Character Creator) and Cinema 4D is already about as much as I'm willing to handle in my workflow. I don't think, I'll be adding e.g. Unreal to the mix because I don't really see the point (render speed is not that important to me; I have several machines so I can always do something else while renders take place in the "background"). Hm, not that bad What would you improve then?

I definitely would do the camera work on a different way, the fact that your 2024 object is shaking all the time is very unrealistic. It would give more attraction to your character if the 2024 sign remains static. It also seems you attached camera to her head/body in some shots, this simply looks odd. These are all personal views, fortunately we have freedom in the way we create art ;)

The "2024" is not moving at all, it just looks that way because of the camera motion. I'll be preparing a version for YouTube shorts (needs to be re-rendered, but, since the resolution is a lot lower, it should not take quite that long - I hope) so I have an opportunity to revisit the camera motion.

Sure, I did not expect you to move that 2024 sign, though your camera movement makes it hop all the time...

Realistic hair sims are tough enough and you chose a fairly “violent” body motion making it even more challenging. I still run an Old seat of C4DR26 so it's good too see how much Maxon has vastly improved the cloth system since then.

Well, I like a challenge (for hair and clothing). ;-) The old cloth system in C4D was no good for character clothing (just for stuff like flags and the like) which is one of the reasons why I added iClone to my workflow. The iClone soft-cloth simulation is not great but better than what C4D had in the "old" days. Now, this has turned around and C4D currently beats the pants off iClone (if you are patient enough to experiment and wait for the simulation to finish).
