I am new to 3D modeling and game design. I want to build a very small and basic game just to get my hands dirty with 3D Games. I have almost no experiencing working with tools like Blender or ZBrush and would ideally like to avoid that for this particular game as this is just more of a 'proof of concept, I can do it' sort of an ordeal. I have worked with 3D studio's such as DAZ3d and Poser for character manipulations, but they never left those platforms, and that brings me to my next concern. It looks like there isn't anywhere near as much asset content available for CC4 as there are for DAZ and Poser, which worries me because if I wanted to do something that isn't included as an available asset, it 'looks' like I would need to build it in Blender or ZBrush, which I'm not ready to do yet.

My basic goal is to:
--Create a character
--Morph the character to my liking
--Clothe the character to my liking
--Animate the character to my liking in CC4
--Use the character in a Game Engine such as Unity and summon certain animations I have created based on certain circumstances and conditions.
--Perhaps look into animating the same character in Unity and determine which place is better to animate.

My questions are:

How available is content for CC4, are there any other alternate resources or sites to obtain characters, clothing, hair, creatures, ect.. or do I need to be prepared to rig these items myself?
Have you imported objects such as clothes or creatures from other models available online?
Have you ever had to deal with licensing for any models or creations you have used?

Here is also another question.. ..would you recommend my approach of animating the character in CC4 vs Unity?

Character Creator cannot animate 3d models. You additionally need iClone to do this.

You can import additional assets in common 3d formats into CC but then it's not guaranteed they will fit exactly, so you'll need to resize or even edit them, which can only be done with limited tools in CC itself. Usually it is expected that you can handle other 3d applications to do this.

On the other hand, you can get finished 3d characters from other asset stores and rig them in CC in a semi automatic way. I usually recommend Artstation. It's not as expensive as other professional stores and you can buy different licences, for example for hobby projects, small commercial projects or studio projects. This would take care of your question about commercial usage.

The problem with Poser or DAZ characters is, that they have too many polygons for real-time rendering in a game. It is important to stay under a certain threshold, for example 10 000 - 60 000 polygons for a main character. Finer details are faked with textures.

Old school games only had characters with hundreds of polygons.

Both Poser and Daz studio now have options to reduce character polygon counts for game export.
The one caveat being that while Daz studio is free the “decimator” is a $100 plugin sold in the Daz store.
Poser comes with this ability built in
but the cheapest version you can buy from Bondware cost $129 dollars but I have seen poser 12 for as little as $60 on Ebay.
so “pick your poison” as they say.

All achievable apart from the animation. Character Creator 4 doesn't create animation or allow editing of animations. However, you can import animations from 3rd party sources or use animations from the Reallusion Stores but they can only be exported as is. You would need to do any animation editing in iClone or Unity.

Ok I do not visit this forum very often but when i do and i see something like this I try to give all my knowledge of the subject.

Everything you ask is easily done and follow the steps and you will have a game ready animated model for your games.

1. Create your model
2. Upload to mixamo and animate then there you go.

Not use recycle canned animations from Mixamo

He wants to create specific animations

As a beginner just learning you are not going to get any animations you want.

I have been animating for years and even i use mixamo some times as it is faster and easy.

If it is a small game for learning then my suggestion is the best one.

Start small, learn from it.

Mixamo rigs then animates and you can build your animations in blender.

You can even take there rigs and animations and better them.

Unity is a play toy, learn how to code your games, you will thank me later.

the OP can create any animation he wants with Iclone 8(if he has it) ,and Iclone has a complete pipeline tool to unity

Actually for a complete newbie Beginner game dev Godot is the probably a better option than unity
The OP could use Daz Genesis and this product
to harvest any of the Mixamo motions in daz studio

Export FBX to Blender and from Blender export glb to Godot.

Hi Mike,

I am very similiar to you. I have always been interested in game design as a kid and only now, well into my 50's, has the desire been rekindled.

You can certainly accomplish creating good characters in CC4, then animating them in IC8. You will ofcourse need to buy both software's. There were a ton of Black Friday sales so I hope you were able to take advantage of that.

The next thing you want to do is download as much free content as you can to create a Content Library. Mix and match outfits on different Avatars so you can get the feel of how CC4 works.

There are tons of 3D websites to download assets from. Some are free, some you pay. You can also bring in assets from other software like Daz3d.

Sketchfab
RenderHub
CGTrader

I wont lie. Some assets come in on the first shot and some assets I simply did not have the skillset to edit it and get it to fit my CC4 avatar. You can get easily frustrated here so my advice is take the wins with the assets that work, and cut your losses with the assets that do not work.

Start here first before you start thinking about Unity or Unreal5 as you will get overwhelmed in a hurry ! I certainly dd but I could not help myself. I just needed to see how its being done!!

I hope you find this helpful.

Good luck and stick to it !
