I remember watching a seminar several months ago with Mark Diaz.  He mentioned an App in the works that would be a Character Creator version specifically for automating the rigging process and making 2D characters for CTA5.  Is that going to be a reality and is there a "ballpark" time-frame on that?
Or is that just wishful thinking?
As a complete newbie to CTA5... my first thoughts when using the program were... "Wow, this is great.. but man, this is very convoluted."  Like so many different aspects of character creation are haphazardly thrown into this, in addition to past versions of Crazy Talk and older character versions.  I mean, it's powerful... but very confusing.  It'd be nice if all of that were put into it's own App that would create a final, finished Actor that you would just import into your CTA5 inventory.  And then that actor would already function with all the Animation functions in CTA5 - lip sync, 360 head, adding motions, spring bones, hand bones, etc.
I think lots of people who don't want to use the "pipeline" of making perfect template layers in Photoshop, Illustrator, Corel, etc. would love the prospects of a separate App to work in and handle all of that.
Leave the animation to CTA5.  Leave the character creation to the other App.

Unfortunately I think this may have been a misunderstanding. There is no Character Creator 2D version in development at this time. For the foreseeable future the current SVG and PSD template methods will remain the way to create custom characters.

Ok... so Mark Diaz and that other cool guy that never gives his name out, and wears his headphones over his forehead... JUST said at the end of the brand spankin' new, one day old Webinar... Create Motion Comics Fast using Cartoon Animation at time signature 1:20:30... Character Creator for CTA5... that they are planning this and it's in the works.. but not planned for this year... but it is in development.

So, that's cool.  Something to look forward to.  I hope they do develop that.  I think it would be a good addition. 
(As long as it's not totally reliant on expensive 3rd party programs.  It'd be great if it just simply allowed importing of widely used file formats... ..PNG, SVG, etc.  Not exclusively PSD or AI.)  Just my two cents.

I think you're misunderstanding what they said was in the works. They were talking about a system that would allow you to rig a 2D character body so that you can turn it from front to side view... something along similar lines to how the current G3 360 head feature works but for the character body. That's not the same as a 2D character creator being in development.

Right now if you want to create your own, completely custom characters from scratch there's no getting around having to create all the sprites yourself. Particularly eye and mouth sprites, but also hands, if you prefer sprite hands over bone hands.

The alternative is to 'kit bash' existing characters in the composer, which is perfectly valid (and saves a lot of time) if you're making characters for your own projects and not planning to sell those characters in the Marketplace.
