Hello everyone,
I'm wondering if there is any difference between using either iPhone 13 (normal, mini, pro) or iPhone 14 (normal, pro) for face mocap in iClone 8?

From brief google research I wasn't able to find out any specs changes regarding TrueDepth camera that is used for face mocap. Obviously it will have faster CPU, better display and main camera...

Is there any other use-case for using iPhone when doing full performance human character animations? (iClone 8 + Motion Live, Character Creator 4, Unity, Rokoko 2, Oculus VR)

Thanks a lot.
Have an awesome day!

Nope, any iPhone with Face ID will work just fine (for quite a while I was using my X until I upgraded recently to the latest - absolutely no difference.  Which makes sense - this isn't a matter of needing a lot of processing power).

For best use though make sure you get the adapter so you can connect via Ethernet.

I use an iPhone 12 for my facial mocap and it works great. 13 and 14 should be just as good, though I doubt there will be a noticable improvement.

I bought I refurbished unlocked iPhone XR from Apple, which has been working very well. It was around $500 at the time.

My iPad Pro works very well too. As long as it has a True Depth camera.

What if I don't necessarily want to animate live, but simply capture my facial animation and use that at a later date. Are there apple apps that will save something I said, or an expression and export as an fbx to be imported at a later time, Does Live Face support this? Or perhaps some other app? I don't own an apple device and can't find out where to access the apple app store on a pc to see what apps are available.

Actually, you can do this with Live Face (also Faceware, but much more $$$ and not nearly as good):

Alienware Aurora R12, Win 10, i9-119000KF, 3.5GHz CPU, 128GB RAM, RTX 3090 (24GB), Samsung 960 Pro 4TB M-2 SSD, TB+ Disk space

I'm personally not that impressed with using an iPhone/iPad for lip syncing (Apple's ARKKit). It's very "picky" on what it thinks it sees your mouth doing and how your mouth moves may not align with your 3D character.
I have been impressed with the latest version of AccuLips in iClone-8. Sometimes I use the iPad to capture the face movement and clip out the major mouth morphs and merge the AccuLips speech morphs.

I use one character in iClone when I do this and export the FBX file. My characters in Cinema-4D have all the required morphs, so I wrote a scripts to only read the FBX morph keyframes, not the morphs themselves.

I think Apple's ARKKit will be discontinued soon due to the advancements in AI based  image/video capture where you don't need special hardware.

Bruce.

This is what I do...use acculips and then use the face app to capture all but the mouth. However, acculips is not working for me anymore. Fails to align. ugh. Any suggestions?
