I'm waiting on I8 to try it, but I thought I'd ask if anyone knows how smooth that process might be. I've imported USD from Character Creator with no problem, but I'm wondering about cameras and animation

I assume you mean to use it for Omniverse? I've played with it it little bit and you can actually export all elements of a complete scene in USD. In Omniverse it would then be included as separate items so you can still manipulate them. There are some videos about this, but I found it quite simple. For example, all textures are there, which is big deal and usually a hassle when going to external applications, such as Unreal (which is way over my head). It's been a while, but if I can do it anyone can do it...:P Hopefully, more experienced users will chime in. By the way, you can already try it out in iClone 7.9.

No. I know it will work in Omniverse.
Blender imports USD files too, and I'm wondering if I might want to try that route instead of Omniverse, because Omniverse is subject to change.
If you don't mind, could you try importing an animated USD file into Blender and see what happens?

USD is not an Omniverse invention, so I wouldn't be worried about Omniverse changing (other than bug fixes and getting better). Omniverse is my new favorite toy and I have spent most of this year playing with it. It has a way to go to get to production ready, but a year or two from now I predict OV will be well out of beta.

You're not getting me. I understand that USD is a standard that won't change.
Omniverse is currently free for the way I want to use it. That could change, and it also involves uploading as well as downloading huge files if you are working on big projects.I'm fine with Iray renders, but I am also whole hog happy with Blender's regular output. Blender and Iclone supports particles, but Iray and Omniverse don't. From everything I read now, in Omniverse, you have to re-do particles you've created in iClone, and Popcorn FX are invisible in Iray locally.
I'm just wondering about a clean path from an iClone USD to a blender render of an animated scene. I'm surprised this concept is so difficult to grasp.
I guess I'll find out soon enough when iClone 8 finally releases if I can easily include Blender in my iClone pipeline

There is a particle system in OV. It has some room for improvements, but I think NVidia will get there. Have you seen any of this?

If you don't mind, could you try importing an animated USD file into Blender and see what happens? If I import an USD file into Blender I only get the mesh without materials or animation. BTW, I needed to set the scale factor to 0.01 to get the right size. I'm not that well-versed in Blender, so I'm probably doing something wrong, but I had the various import options enabled (materials, animation, etc.).

From what I read, any particles done in Omniverse will have to be redone from scratch. But we'll see.

I don't know how autocorrect changed Omniverse into iPhone in my last reply. Phones were not made for computing.
