Another way to adjust clothing is to use an Opacity map, where white leaves a part visible and black makes a part invisible. This was used extensively in the older iClone CloneCloth system.
If the Diffuse map of your garment is in the same shape of your garment and clearly demarcates the sleeves, for example, you can then make the part that you want to remove black on the Opacity map.
If the sleeve texture shows a border of some kind, you may then have to adjust the Diffuse texture. I have used this technique occasionally as it is relatively simple to do.
