Alright, so I've went through licenses few times, but still getting pretty confused by it...

Part of it says that I can use the characters I make royalty free etc etc, the other part mentions only videos and images, and yet another part says I need a "mass distribution" license to put a character in a game...

SO I guess the question is: If I buy the software (CC3 / possibly CC3 + Headshot plugin), use it to create some characters + possibly slap on them some assets from the asset store ("Export" ones) - can I put these characters in my game without any additional hassle (aka some weird "mass distribution" license) or not.

Thanks in advance.

Edit:
This question is regarding the licensing concerns, and licensing concerns only.

There have been many games created using CC3 characters and a number of devs in this forum actively using it in their pipelines.

There are definitely some issues that we've been told are being actively worked on and there are members of the forum working on solutions themselves. If you have the right technical know how (or a team) you can create your own solutions. Otherwise, you may have a lot of issues trying to get your characters to look right in newer versions game engines and using some of the newer CC3 features (i.e. smart hair). Unreal seems to be an "easier" and much more supported path for game development and there is a great Unreal community in this forum. RL received a Epic grant a while back, so it has received more support than Unity. If you're a Unity Dev, here are some threads to pay attention to:

https://forum.reallusion.com/488356/Unity-Auto-Setup
https://forum.reallusion.com/485296/Unity-Dev-Thread

Edit: My understanding is as long as you have the export version of used assets, you can use them in your games. The distribution license seems to be there to make sure their marketing team is aware of the projects being published that used RL as part of their pipeline.

Thanks Miles, most insightful stuff, I'll make sure to check out the threads You've posted (I'm a unity dev, bit too far gone into the project to switch to UE as well, so these links are definitely most appreciated Smile)

And regarding the "distribution license" or w/e it's called, well - I think there was something about them giving a > permission <, so obviously that's too much of a risk (especially that it's a pretty big project) to have to replace, re-rig, re-buy, re-setup etc etc tons of different characters in the game just because at some point they decide to go like  "nope, we don't like your game, take it down, thanks for the money!"

So still waiting for a reply from someone from the team before I spend even a  single dollar on the software.

So thank You again for the replies guys, got some stuff to read about until the team decides to reply ^ ^

Hi...

Character Creator 3 is the perfect tool for creating characters for your games.

If you do plan to make a game or application using Reallusion characters and/or other content you will require a Mass Distribution License but this is totally FREE. The MDL is required just so we can keep track of the games and applications where our content is being used and allows us to promote and showcase them on our website and social media channels.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the reply.

So is the license given to everyone at all times, or is it something subjective on part of Your team / legal, that could be denied or revoked, despite the fact I'd pay for the product and spend possibly hundreds of hours setting things up using characters made with CC3?

or to simplify the question - upon product purchase and Mass distribution License request, am I guaranteed to both receive and keep the Mass Distribution License forever?

Well, luckily 4 days of waiting for a reply to a pre-sale question that I'm pretty sure the answer to is a ridiculous one was enough to learn a freeware tool and supplement it with blender enough to get much better and hassle free results.

Great pre-sale service guys, I can only imagine how good the customer support is Smile

Thanks and bye Smile

Hi Amy

It is a common misconception that the the forum is where you come for Customer (Sales) and Technical Support questions but that is not the case.

We have a dedicated Customer Support department who help with any pre-sale questions. The forum is primarily intended for user to user discussion but is moderated by myself and other members of Reallusion. Of course as in most occupations we do take time off, especially at weekends, so questions on the forum may not always get an immediate response from an RL team member.

So if you have any urgent purchase questions please always use the Support form below and one of Support team will gladly help you.

https://www.reallusion.com/CustomerSupport/UserEx/QForm.html

However, regarding the question about the Mass Distribution License, this is only likely to be refused if the subject matter of your proposed game is deemed to cause damage to the reputation of Reallusion. This could be perhaps if the game includes extreme levels of pornography or content that would be considered socially unacceptable by most people. Generally you should request a Mass Distribution License for each game or application you plan to produce.

I hope this helps, albeit a little late.
