Hi,

I am trying to create a short animation maybe 10 seconds or so depicting a character falling from an operating room table. I am new to this software but this is an important project that I would love if someone more experienced can guide me. I watched several tutorials on iclone 7 so far and it seems that character animations are from templates but I was not able to find the falling animation template. Thanks so much.

If you want to do this easily I'd STRONGLY recommend using Cascadeur (and you can export the animation and bring it in with 3DXChange to iClone).

Would take only a few minutes.

Thanks so much for replying so quickly.

Is it difficult to create animations such as falling using iClone ?

Going to take a look at cascadeur seems to be free for basic version. Please let me know if you have other ideas. Thanks !

Hi, also is it difficult to transfer the animation you created in cascadeur to iclone ? For example, for my character who is to be a patient and I design his falling animation on cascadeur, I still need to put him on top of an operating room table which it seems cascadeur doesn't allow. So when I transfer my animation to iclones will it scale to the lying character instead of on the ground but lying on top of the operating room table  and then falling to the ground ? I am trying to learn cascadeur right now by watching its tutorials. Thanks !

Hi Jack

While it is completely possible to create the animation from scratch in iClone, if you want to save time you can tweak existing animations to create what you are looking for.

So for example, the two animations below found in ActorCore could be combined to create a falling from bed animation. To do this you would start with the laying down animation (or create your own starting pose) and then trim the second falling clip to cut out the running part and only include the falling part. You would then just need to use Edit Motion Layer to smooth the transition between the first and second parts but it shouldn't take too long to do, especially if you are used to keyframe animation.

Thanks so much for replying Peter !

I took a look at the two animations and it seems that although it can be combined to form one falling, it doesn't give me the particular freedom to adjust character position in between the animation as cascadeur seems to be allow. I am currently trying to learn cascadeur though it has been a real challenge admittedly. Does this sound like a good idea to you ? The project I am working on requires me to depict a character falling from an operating room table and we want to be able to depict the patient falling in various ways such as from a tilted table or just transfering from bed to operating room table.

Cascadeur is a tool just like iClone is a tool -- using existing animations to create a certain effect is fine but doesn't allow nearly as many variations or customizations.

And, yes, the learning curve is a bit steep, but once you get it it becomes fairly easy, particularly for things like this (where someone just falls).  Doing something like a somersault or some other complicated physical move is more demanding, but still possible.  Even though I have a mocap suit I got Cascadeur to help with falls because I'm an old man who just can't fall anymore (at least not without not being able to get back up :>).

I actually got the $150 paid version which allows a bit more ability but mostly because I wanted to support the team.  But the free version is very capable of doing a lot.  Remember, though, that to get the resultant animation back into iClone will require 3DXChange.  What you do is export as an FBX (not the mesh) and then bring it into XChange.  From there you export as a motion.  Once you have the motion you can use it inside of iClone for any character, starting from any position, just as you would any other motion.

@Mike
Is it possible to import your own interactive environment into Cascadeur? Like terrains, stairs and such? Animated props which would interact with the character?

Hi Kelleytoons,

I am currently trying to export a demo 2 second animation I created in cascadeur and I was able to successfuly import the non mesh bone figure to Xchange, however the ability to apply the animation to iClone is greyed out. Is this possibly because I am using the trial version ? I am able to apply to iclone the Node with the animation. However the option to apply the animation to my selected character in iclones is what I really want. Thanks for your help !
