I'm new to iClone. Please help me how to permanently bake texture maps (files)  to an object so that I won't get the "Texture files failed to load please locate the file..." when I load my iProp. I own a large collection of 3D object models and I want to make these objects into iClone's iProps, then move those objects and their texture maps to an external hard drive for storage.
.
Appreciate your help.

Hi...

If you import a prop into iClone with textures and save the prop to your custom content library then the textures will be embedded (baked) with the prop by default. The only exception to this is if you use video textures. Video textures are always saved externally from the model.

With the prop loaded in a scene and selected go to the Modify Tab and open the Materials section.

If the prop references external files for the various texture Maps these will show with a small "Chain-link" icon in the lower left corner of each map and the name and location of the image file will be displayed in the "Bitmap" field as shown below:

To embed the images in the prop file click on the "Embed Texture" icon to the right of the file name to do just that.

The "Chain-link" icon and the file name/location disappear and now you just need to resave the prop file to ensure that everything is included in the file.

Note: You will have to embed each and every texture map in the prop that has a "Chain-link" icon attached to it.

iClone offers the user the opportunity to link to external textures in the Preference panel. If this box is checked then the texture files will be linked to, giving a smaller prop file size. If the box is unchecked then any texture files used in the prop will be included in the saved file resulting in a larger file size.

VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE PLEASE READ

In iClone, toretain a 3D Object’s texture maps after you apply them to the model, followthese steps:

Import the 3D model into iClone via 3DXChange,or direct from the folder providing the model is FBX or Obj file format.

1.    After the model is loading into iClone, select the model by double clickingon it.

2.    Click on the Modify Tab and click on the texture icon, the one thatlooks like a check board.

3.    Now click on the eye dropper. Take the eye dropper to the model andclick on different part of the model to display the Mesh Name and Material Nameon the Modify Tab under Mesh Name and Material list. This will, under theTexture Settings(Y), also display the corresponding, Base Color, Opacity, Bump,AO, Metallic, Roughness, Displacement, Glow, and Blend texture maps for thatMesh Name.

4.    Now locate the folder that holds the model’s Material or Texture Mapsfor that Mesh Name. Drag each Base Color, Bump, Metallic, Roughness, Glow into theircorresponding under the Texture Settings(Y) in the Mofify tab.

5.    Repeat step 4 through 5 for all the meshes of the model, or until themodel is completely textured.

6.    THIS STEP IS VERY IMPORTANT: After you completely satisfy with the wayyour texture looks on your model, locate the folder where the model’s original texturemaps are located. Inside this folder create a folder and name it Texture_Maps_Holder.Move all the Texture Maps into this newly created folder.

7.    Come back to iClone and click on the model, a popped-up message will warnyou that “X image(s) have been deleted. Would you like to embed the image(s)?      Click on “Yes” option. iClone willpermanently embed the materials or Textures onto this model.

8.    Now click on the Content tab.

9.     On the top of the content tab, click on the corresponding icon such as avatar, motion, stage, prop, material. In most case you would click on the prop icon—the one look like a tree group.

10.Make sure “custom”green lit or highlighted. Below that you would choose whether this model is a Prop,Tree, Grass, Particle, Terrain, Water, Sky or Motion Path

11.On the lower rightcorner of the Content tab, you will see a + (plus) sign. Click on this + signand iClone will make this model a custom iProp.

12.Now right click on thiscustom iProp and when a pop-up comes up, choose “Rename” option to change namethis iProp to your likeness. You may want to include EDM after the name. EDM =Embeded Materials or Textures.

13.Now create a folderin your hard drive and name it Custom_iProps_EDM_Folder

14.Now right clickagain on the iProp and choose “Copy”. Open your Custom iProp folder you createdin step 14 above, and pates the iProp model you just copied into this folder.

15.Next time your loadthis custom iProp, it won’t ask for you to locate the missing material or texturemaps even after the materials or texture maps are deleted or moved.

Why 15 steps when simply making sure that the correct setting is selected in the Preferences panel will do it all for you?
