I have a couple of 100 motionclips i need to adjust and make changes to, clean things out between the arms and hands but can not understand how to edit just the hands alone when there is no such channel in the timeline
only left and right arms or fingers.. but this doesn't help as, i could have hoped added hand edits ended up in the gesture lane.

How is it done?

At the top where it says animation, click on that and the drop down box will have more options. Where it says apply gestures, you can apply to left or right or both.

Thank you for taking the time to answer but the question was not about gestures..

i have about 250 clips i need to modify to suit particular characters and cleaning some hands motion or moving the arms they share the same key.. Removing one or the other removes both.. If there had been a way to transfer hands over to the gestures lane would have been optimal...
