I exported a character (elastic folks male) to PSD, changed his skin color, hair and some face parts. I saved it and went back into CA4 and used the 360 head creator to adjust the pieces into proper looking turns. Back on the stage I animated the character and saved the file (I always save before rendering). I rendered to a video and all was well.

However, when I opened the file later to make some edits all of the work I did to the 360 face was gone.

Macbook Pro, mid 2015, MacOS Sierra v10.12.6
CA4 Pipeline v4.21.1808.1

Sorry to hear you have had problems saving changes to a character.

Although obviously a bit late now, you should always try to save to a new file rather than overwriting the original . This applies to everything including projects. That way if you have problems with your current save you can drop back to a previous working save.

For the actual issue you have had, is this something you can repeat with all saves or was it just a random event? if it is repeatable, please let us know the exact steps to repeat the issue and we will investigate the problem.

Hey Peter. Thanks for the tip. As a matter of course I do usually save to new files with version numbers appended to the name. Learned that lesson over the years that's saved my butt many times. But I didn't think I would need to do that many incremental saves. Doesn't speak well of the software if I have to have 50 versions of a file. I'll make note to save new versions after major changes such as those described.

And this saving issue (props and characters changing) is problematic and consistent from file to file.

You don't have to have 50 copies. Just keep the last three or four saves. For me 99% of the time overwriting a file will be fine but unexpected things can happen. It could be a power outage, hardware failure, or hard drive problems. It just makes sense to be cautious when you have spent a lot of time working on something.
