Under what circumstances do the collision settings not work?

I have been at this all day.  And it seems like I have tried every setting.

I even tried setting the collision shapes at an exaggerated size.

I have tried different margins on the collision shapes, etc, etc.

But it's like it is ignoring my settings or something.

I have clothing layers going through each other.

I have an inner long inner clothing layer going through the calves.

And I have a longer outer clothing layer that keeps going through his sandals and the feet!

I thought I near had it last week.  But it plays back differently, so I went back through it.

Why?  What am I doing wrong or forgetting to do or not know about yet?

How do you guys get the collision settings to work without any issues?

I don't get it.

I am using all of the settings that Rampa found work best.

I am also using the opacity maps he made to help me get these right.

It doesn't come out the same way on my finalized / polished character.

The differences in the character and his touched up clothing would have no connection to the cloth physics.

So somehow my settings or order of things are still different, unless Rampa just has the touch.

And it plays back differently every time.  It will play at least decently for me once.  Then it goes bananas.

What am I missing in this physics stuff, you guys?

A video or screenshots of what exactly is happening would help everyone to find a possible solution.

Also during the playback, you may notice it tearing through, but when you render it, it usually doesn't. Have you tried rendering out the sequence to see if it's doing it? Try rendering out a part of the sequence and see.

My test renders all come out the same as what I see on the screen.

My only focus right now is on 2 layered clothing items.

I have the physics on for only those 2 pieces.

The clothing layers are items that I had modified into a Bible Times outfit.

It is a long inner robe and a slightly longer outer layer as a sleeveless coat.

The sleeveless coat goes into his sandals and his feet anytime he bends his leg forward or sits down.

I even tried exaggerating the collision shape on the feet and it still goes right through it.

When I have the soft cloth on, the outfit goes nuts and rides up above his knees after he sits down.

When I have the soft cloth unchecked, the clothing layers of course go through each other.

The inner clothing layer also goes through his calves and shins, no matter how I set the collision shapes on his legs.

First of all, after you change the collision margins, set the speed from 'realtime' to 'frame by frame' and play through the entire scene. You need to bake the new collision changes before they will properly update. Then turn it back to realtime and view the collision.

Collision is one of those things that I try to avoid at all costs with IClone. It just doesn't seem to work very well. I've had my fair share of issues and I try to limit myself to using short hair on characters, or capes. Something manageable with not too many moving parts. The entire collision system just needs to be re-worked IMO to be made easier to use and to work more efficiently. Some users here have mastered the collision system, and have seen some great results, but it's not easy and takes a lot of patience.

This is a tricky one that I would encourage everyone to test. It is pushing the limits a bit to do multi-layers, so it is a worthy challenge! Brings honor! :)

So everybody go ahead and try a dual-robe type clothing setup.

Thank you, James.  And yes, I agree.  The physics feature could definitely stand some refining.

I have actually had it on frame by frame throughout all of these tests.

I also play it back very manually by hand to take it very slowly.

And this isn't even a complicated set of motion clips.  They are only simple tests.

Mine are complicated in the real scene, though, with several different broken down and edited motions in it.

The physics and collision test is only a simple walk in a loop and going from standing to sitting.

Neither of those very minimal clips are in the real scene that I am currently trying to finish up.

The Reallusion tutorial videos only cover the "how to" basics.

They do not have anything on the challenges I have made. :-D

I would love to see them make a tutorial video with long clothing layers...

...At least one clothing layer with puffy sleeves, and at least one clothing layer going to the feet...

...And also with some long flowing hair that goes well below the shoulders and touches into the clothing layers...

...Then combine that with a set of very complicated animation pieces that present some real challenges.

But so far no such luck as to see something like that. :-P

Rampa has been a huge help.  Mark has also taught me some invaluable stuff.  Graham has taught me some cool things.

But the combination of what I am doing right now, I just can't seem to get it all to work right together, you know?

On the baking: I thought it had to look right first before I baked it.

But I need to bake it first before it will look right?

(I have not baked anything yet because it has not looked just right yet.)

Rampa, you are so cool!!

Thank you!
:)

Yes, everyone: Listen to Rampa!  It is a worthy challenge and it brings honor. :)

Besides, you guys do not want a GIRL to get ahead of you in this, do you?

So go ahead... Try it.  As a matter of fact, I triple doggy dare you all. :D

And post your results here... ... ...

Kimmie,

I generally look at the forums late at night before bed and rarely post anything.  My last post here was to you a good while back and I saw too late that you had asked me if I do tutorials but I wasn't there to reply - sorry about that.  (the reply would have been that I did in the past upload some of my efforts on YouTube to help others but they are gone now and were far from great anyway).

Two suggestions come to mind for your current problems but the first is easier to suggest than to carry out - I would need to have a play first before being responsible for pointing you down a fruitless path.

Anyway, the first suggestion is to have the two-pieces of clothing created as just one object.  Then self-collision should prevent one layer going through the other.  The clothing object as a whole would collide against the collision objects but self-collision would keep the two layers apart.  (I hope I'm remembering correctly that Iclone's physics includes self-collision).

I have in the past made clothing objects that consisted of a top and a skirt but they were only one object in spite of a gap round the midriff.  I guess that a two-piece object made up of two layers would import into CC3 and could be fitted to a figure there ?  I haven't used CC3 that much to be honest.
Such a clothing model would need to be put together in a modelling package.  I generally use Hexagon from DAZ to make simple clothing.  If I get a chance tomorrow I'll show some images of what I'm exploring for my own projects.

My second suggestion is for the hair.  Instead of using the normal gravitational physics, try applying a gentle wind force instead.  I think its in the physics section of the Modify panel when the hair is selected.  Right now I'm not using my Iclone computer to verify.  If the character isn't indoors then a gentle breeze through the hair adds a lot of realism and the wind can lift the hair from the shoulders.

It's funny you should say that, Grimhilda.

I was just telling an animation friend on the phone today that I do not even care if we have physics on the hair in this scene.

And my husband & I were just discussing a few minutes ago about us both wanting wind in the scene.

But wind in the scene would further the complications with the physics and the hair and make it take too much time to create.

What did not occur to me is the wind would blow the hair naturally without the physics.  Perfect!!

Then the indoor scenes will generally have simple enough animations on them that we can turn the physics on.

Oh believe me: I have at times lately wished this were a one-piece outfit. :D

As a matter of fact, I was just telling my husband that I can sure see why Delerna makes all of his one piece!

But for these in particular, that would mean putting the UV maps of the clothing pieces I coordinated together into Blender at the least.

The ones on this character (as will be on many of the others) are made by Big Boss.

His clothing is very high in quality.  But they are all separate pieces.

I have not hardly ventured into Blender yet because we have so much to do for this production.

So we need to keep it simple if we are going to get this done.  That means no Blender.

Rampa has helped me a whole lot on figuring out the issues that have come up.

As of this evening, it is all solved for this scene and I got it now, and I am very grateful for his help.

We can finally move forward now. :)

And yes, I would love to see what you are working on!

~ Kimmie
