My advice would be that if you are truly going for a stubble look (which is SO popular nowadays -- actually, has been for the last 10-15 years among Hollywood) you note that it is almost NEVER as even as your examples. IOW, in both color as well as length it varies across the various sections of the face, with the "moustache", lower chin, and lower sides often being longer than the rest. This gives a truly convincing look (whereas the even look you are showing reminds me more of the old G.I. Joe doll features with beard. so the above is far better than:

Yep true on that, Kelleytoons. I'm pretty certain that the level of combinations that I'm working on will suit most needs from the Shaggy (Scoobydo) scruffy look to the more refined neatly trimmed beards. A couple of models for the examples are my two sons and a couple of mates so I pretty sure that real life can be imitated by art... But then what do I know. I've only had my whiskers for 30 odd years . The process I'm working on should, hopefully work out okay... If not it is always back to the drawing board. Anywho, thanks for the feed back, Kellytoons, and as John Mclaine would say, 'it has been taken onboard with advisement'.

Well, I will certainly be interested in purchasing anything you can create that does show that "scruffy look" (I was just rewatching "Ant-Man" today and Scott has that look throughout most of the film as well -- very "House" like in that you can tell he's not clean shaven but from a distance it doesn't look like he has a beard). I've had a beard ALL my adult life, but because I have no chin (hence the beard) I've never been able to go "scruffy" as much as I'd like. But I would like my characters to do so at times.

I definitely like 2, 3 and 4 (would still like to see more color variation with white, though -- some of us oldies get that dusting of grey and it's pretty hard to accurately convey it with most hair whether it's on the head or on the face, as most vendors make it all of one color. You get THAT right and you'll really have something).

There are at least 6 layers of whiskers in this example. Each layer can be altered via strength/lightness/hue and saturation, which means that there many variations of coloring can be achieved. At the moment there are 7 beard variations that can be mixed and matched. Each variation has 3 layers; stubble, whisker 1, and whisker 2. The variation layers are accumulative so that one could theoretically start with Beard 1 (variation 1) and build up beard density and color (as in the first pictures I uploaded). Here Barney shows us his age:

I must admit I have struggled to get this effect in Photoshop for years. By creating layers in Substance I think I have achieved some progress. This picture is an accumulation of the seven beard variations with coloring and strength applied in various amounts.
